iPhone 14 Pro overheating on 2024 X5 charging pad

My phone 14 Pro hasn't once succeeded in reaching 100% from below 50% without overheating ever since I switched to the 2024 X5; with or without a case on. My same phone in the same case had absolutely no issues in my 2020 M550.

It could be the car in general, my car specifically, a recent iOS update, a new fault in my iPhone hardware, or something else entirely. Has anyone else experienced this with the X5 LCI?

I've only had my 50e for a week, but the same thing happens to me. The phone gets really hot.

I got a USB C cable for the center armrest storage and plan to keep the phone in there to charge when needed. (I don't typically use the USB A outlet near the charging pad because I don't like the visible wires showing!)

BMW wireless charging pads are not designed well. The output is so small and they overheat your phone.

I have never used them in my BMWs. Always use the USB-C and you will get fast charging. I run a cable up from the arm rest and put the phone in that cubby or just leave in the armrest. If you don't use the 12v adapter for a radar detector you can use that for a fast charger as well.

With iPhone 15 coming out soon, it will be USB-C as well with no more lightning port. Faster charging.

Fun Fact: BMW's wireless charger is actually an induction heater.

FWIW, the pro max exceeds the specs for the X5's charging pad in length, but the 14Pro does not.

Make sure that it is centered and the LED lights up and the LED turns blue (which means it is properly centered).

Yeah! Just bring your phone along, put it on the charging pad and use the sceen as the surface on which you heat your burrito

You must have gotten the space heater variant- mine just won't charge fully, and immediately opens Apple Wallet, as if they just want more of my money.

The iPhone pro Max exceeds the maximum size the BMW user's manual says it supports. How that affects charging, can't say, but BMW essentially saying if it isn't within certain XYZ size, all bets are off.

Same here, I think it messed up my phone battery. Phone hasn’t been holding charge as well ever since I started using it.

I’m beginning to suspect this is the result of a recent iOS update. I’m seeing overheating on multiple iPhones when using a non-MFI wireless QI charger that has worked fine for years. No overheating on MFI MagSafe chargers. This is like how some charging wires suddenly stop working for Apple products.

First week with the '24 X5, and my iPhone 14 Pro Max gets HOT sitting on the charging pad. It doesn't get hot with/on any other charging device that I have. Fortunately I don't really need to charge it in the car, so for now I'm putting it in the adjacent empty spot to the right.

I'll say it again...at least on my PHEV, the user's manual lists maximum sizes and thickness of cases for use with the charging tray...the iPhone Pro series exceeds the maximum size. IMHO, all bets are off.

My Wife's Mach-e is worse

My wife has a Mustang Mach-e and the wireless charger makes the phone so hot, the phone shuts down. This is on a 30 min. commute. I think its just an issue with the technology or should I say the quality of parts the car companies are using. I say that because I have other wireless chargers around the house and no other one makes the phone too hot. I am trying to figure out how to retrofit an apple magsafe charger into her car in the same slot.

I don't have the same issue in my X5 with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I have taken it on a 3 hour road trip without issues but I don't think it charges the phone but keeps the same charge level with carplay running the whole time.

Why not leave it in the center armrest plugged in to the USB C? Forget about maintaining the charge while using CarPlay. You’ll get to 100% while using CarPlay.

Fair point. As for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, without a case it exceeds the max vertical dimension (I measure it at 6.25" tall). If this causes a misalignment with the charging coil or causes it to not lie flat, maybe that can generate heat if components try harder to work together just out of ideal range.

On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Pro (not Max) is within the stated max dimensions as I measure it. Adding a case might affect how it sits there.

From the manual:
Quote:
The mobile phone must not exceed the maximum size of approximately 6.0 x 3.1 x 0.7 in/154.5 x 80 x 18 mm.

I did something similar. Just plug the fan into the USB port right next to the pad. Stick the fan on the underside of the top cover.

Phone still warm, but wasn't overheating as before.

Doesn't the charging tray enhance cell reception through the roof fin? I think in years past that was the case.
