Fording depth

I see that bmw recommend water no deeper than 50cm or 19 inches. As i have no experience in water crossings can anyone advise if this is set rather conservatively or is this the depth where beyond the engine is likely to stop. How high up is the engine air intake? Are the door seals good enough to keep water out. We have lots of flooding in the uk at the moment and its a big detour for getting home.

You don't have to worry about your air intake - that's feet off the ground. If you're going to be fording streams above your engine, you need a RR or Land Cruiser with a snorkel. Your transmission and differential are not waterproof, and have some complicated electronics inside as well. Twenty-ish inches is listed as the max depth, and probably should be believed. And if you do ford water that deep, also probably a good idea to have seals checked and re-lubed.

TLDR;
Do not fording a flood like this derp in the Jag. Be smart, don't take chances crossing a flood and ruining your G05... take the detours!

My previous posts - regard G05 fording depth for vehicles without and with 2VR 2-axle air suspension:

Without 2VR
Fording depth at standard ground clearance of 8.7" is approximately under 20" at 19.68".

With 2VR
The fording depth is higher for X5/6 with 2-axle air suspension, vehicle height adjustability is two stages to a maximum of 1.6" above the standard setting.

The wading depth is 21.46" with air suspension at High 2 level (only available up to 30kmph/18mph) and there's a water passage identification system that closes your grill and maintains ride height to minimize the possibility of water damage to the engine and electronics.

The manual says, "Drive through water no faster than walking speed, up to 3 mph/5 km/h.". Just in case someone has not noticed it..

Just an FYI also - water is very powerful, a foot of moving water can sweep a car away. Be very careful driving through water!

Yep - nothing says "I'm an idiot" quite like blasting into water of unknown depth at 40-ish or so mph. Apparently some sort of "drown my car" competition going on...a vintage BMW that apparently didn't make it to the other side (might need a couple of hankies to dab off the screen):

When I did the Land Rover driving course they recommended turning off the stop/start option in case you had to stop midway and to go slow and steady. The water level was at bonnet (hood) level and was great fun
