x5 maintenance tips please.

How often do you guys change engine oil or change differential fluid or transmission fluid? because dealer ship would not recommend to replace fluid other than engine oil. even engine oil is recommended every 10k miles. I think that's pretty high miles for replace engine oil.
I am planning to keep my x5 longer time so... I would like to know what you guys are thoughts.

also, I contacted couple of dealer ship to purchase pre paid maintenance programs but they never response so please share some info as well.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Oil is better to change at 8.000 miles, is 10.000 km in Europe. The daily routine is important, if you make few short trips the oil will be in bade shape shorter. If you make 100 miles per day, is better. The other fluids ( transfer case, differentials) in Europe is at around 8 years and 80.000 miles. That's for highway routine, if you go on bad roads will be less. Same mileage for ZF transmission oil. We use here Ravenol, Motul and LiquiMolly for oils and lubricant, you have different brands, also very good. Try something quality, not cheap ones.

Thank you for replying went to the dealership and asked for them to change engine oil and ask them for transmission and differential fluid earlier than what it shows on the manual and they denied. They told me my schedule on the computer is not yet to change anything so I cannot trust them anymore. They just go by what’s on the menu and we all know, that is not right what kind of car can hold engine oil for 10,000 or 15,000 miles that is just wrong I think so. I still have a warranty but I’m still gonna go to local mechanic and have them to replace all the fluid I have a friend who drives, m4 and he changed his differential at 10,000 mile that was already looks so bad. It’s dark and quality was bad and I can see there is some metal particles mixed with the oil and again there was 10,000 mile not 80,000 so dealership told me you don’t need to change anything, how can I trust them?

They denied because they assume you want it done for free under the free maintenance program. They will do it if you tell them that you will pay out of pocket since it is not due yet as per normal interval. Thats what i told my dealer and reminded them not to reset the system so the car will still trigger all normal service due dates. I did mine at 4800miles prior to a road trip. In short i plan to do 5k/15k/25k miles. The dealer will do the 10k/20k/30k for free under the maintenance program.

Even in guarantee period I change the oil half time, so around 12.500 km, filter also. Air and cabin filter once a year, very easy DIY. About your friend with M4, don t mix the cars, that is a very powerful machine, with owners pushed to exploit to the max ( if they want so). If you are a normal highway guy, what I said is enough. If you push harder, reduce the numbers to change the fluids.

Thank you! Yes Im planning to DIY cabin filter. Its family car so mainly my wife and kids ride so i would worry about max performing the vehicle but I just want to make this vehicle for worry free vehicle for my family thats all. Meaning i am planning to keep my x5 for longer time… not like lease vehicle enjoy for couple years and return. If i don’t proactively maintain, i will get get surprised bill at the dealer ship down the road or frick my wife off when she drive which some warning light comes on.

Gathering Information from kind friends here, i may change engine oil at 6000-8000 miles and transmission and differential fluid at 60k miles and let dealer do rest of schedule maintenance such as bakes and plugs and such.

Thank you so much for your time and generous!

by the way, is it worth to invest extended warranty or extended maintenance program?

Depend how lucky are you. Extended warranty come with a price, as well as extended maintenance, which in particular is overwhelming expensive. But these are connected, warranty impose doing the service at the dealer, also costly. In my experience, if the car reaches 50.000 km, so roughly 36.000 miles with no problem at the engine and transmission, you got lucky. All the expenses for dealer and maintenance you can do at a good garage, or yourself in some cases, better and most cost efective.

If you can do an oil analysis, that would be ideal. I've got a 2014 X5 that we just changed the transmission fluid at 104756 miles (only time changing the fluid). Everyone says that's risky as hell. We got lucky. As we were draining it, it looked great. So, we felt pretty good. But we captured a sample and sent it in to Blackstone labs. Their comments "These results look great for ATF that's been run 104,756 miles. Universal averages show typical wear for a ZF 8HP after about 66,000 miles on the oil. The near-average metal levels in this sample suggest all is well with the mechanical parts in this 8 speed. We didn't detect water contamination or insolubles (oxidized solids from use/heat), and the viscosity is in the correct range for ZF LifeGuard 8. No problems or concerns to report for this ZF unit." Analysis attached...

We changed the Front/Rear Diffs and the Transfer Case fluids a week later. Also looked great as we drained them. We didn't send those in for an analysis. Car is running/riding great 2 months later.

To me, it sounds like if you've already got issue with your Transmission/Diffs/xfer case, changing the fluids could cause more problems. But if they're in good shape, changing the fluid should a safe thing to do. Maybe the SAFEST thing to do is to grab a sample for analysis BEFORE you change the fluids. If it comes back good, go for it. If there are problems, don't risk it. Leave it alone.

I have a 2006 X5 that I took to the shop with 188xxx miles to have it checked out. I purchased it used. There was a slight ticking in the engine. There was a check engine oil that came on ocassionall. They said the valve cover was leaking slightly but it needed an engine. My question is this. Would the “service engine soon” indicator come on if it needed an engine?

Engine Oil - every ~ 8000 miles / 10.000 km
Brake Liquid - every 2 years
ZF8 gearbox - 80.000 - 120.000 km or 8 years
Differential & Transfer case oil - as soon as you feel any slight simptoms! (If you do not feel any yet, I wouldn't recommend leaving the oil more than 100.000 km unchanged)
Spark Plugs - around every ~ 60.000 km

Surprised to see the spark plug change interval at 60k km. My previous non bmw vehicles usually had change intervals around 160k km with iridium plugs. Does the X5 have a shorter change interval due to a turbo engine?

B58 service manual recommends changing them every 6th engine oil changing (assuming you change the oil every 10.000km, you get the 60k km interval). Since the reliability of German-made vehicles has significantly decreased over the past 7-8 years, the sooner you change the fluids and other "wearable" parts, the better. It all depends about how good you want mentain your vehicle

What kind of differential fluid is everyone using for front and rear? I've seen either 75W-90 or 70W-80 GL-5 as options to use and don't want to use the wrong one.

I have a 2020 X5 xDrive 4.0i with no locking or limited slip differential. Build date 11/2019.

Thanks!
