Steering feels loose, jittery and bouncy
Does anyone know what issue would cause this?
Have not taken to the dealer yet, just for reference I just had an alignment done a few months ago and tire pressure is correct per the door jam both tire rods where replaced 2k miles ago. For a while now driving at any speeds, the car just doesn’t drive or feel like a “M” car anymore doesn’t feel glued to the road steering feel feels sloppy and loose even in sport plus on everything. I don’t feel confident in any type of corner anymore. Anything I should specifically have the dealer check? I do have 47k miles on the clock. Thanks! |

Any mods?
Did it just become this way all of a sudden? Things to look at are blown shocks, tie rods, swaybar and endlinks.

Yeah about 6k miles ago, I’ve gone to the dealer a few times for this was told alignment. I did have both tie rods replaced a few thousand miles ago due to being seized from New England winters. That still didn’t fix the issue and dealer said they couldn’t find/see anything wrong with steering or shock components. Ever since about 6k miles ago it just hasn’t really driven to me like it should/has. Transmission doesn’t seem as snappy or strong more laggy. All maintenance has been done and by the intervals, all diff fluids changed and transfer case. Not sure what happened but it definitely doesn’t drive or perform like it should. |

Hard to say since all maintenance is up to date. One thing that I use to make sure things are performing as they should is having this scan tool. Very valuable once you have a code to then point you in the right direction.

This is another good option and works with Bimmercode apps for those with per-LCI. Nothing yet for LCI and I'm still waiting for those apps to update.

Wheels, always start with the wheels. A bent rim or improperly balanced tire will take all the confidence out of handling. With electric power steering you wont feel the hopping and vibration in the steering wheel like with traditional power steering, so take the car to a good tire shop that has a Hunter 9700 machine, and have the check the balance and runout.

Agree with the others, you could be looking at anything from a worn bushing to a bent wheel. Unfortunately, it's gonna take some digging and inspection to find the culprit.

Agreed. I’m taking it in on Monday I will see what they say. No active faults, so for the transmission feeling slow/laggy and disconnected I’m sure that will be chalked up to everything works fine. I’ll have them check out the suspension components and belts, pulleys and bearings for issues.

When driving under 40mph but over 10, move the steering wheel back and forth very quickly. If you hear a clunking sound from the front end it is your front end links. Same thing happened to me, wheel felt loose and not normal.

Good thing the front endlinks are cheap and easy to swap out. I DIY mine as preventative maintenance at around 35K since I was lowered on MSS.
