The M50i was listed on the M page in the UK, who really cares. My M50i arriving in UK in a couple of weeks is faster than my 40i that I have now, that's all that matters to me.

In Canada as well but my point was earlier in the thread where I said regardless of where it was listed on the site it would not change people's opinions. More importantly why would someone else's opinion have any bearing on one's purchase? Different horses for different courses. Purchase what makes sense to you. Done.

M60i is the first non M car to have an M engine in the S68.

Still not an M car.

M50i - Not X5M

Just to add my 2 cents here, i recently purchased a 2023 X5 M50i as an upgrade to my 2017 X5 xDrive 35i M sport.

I considered buying the X5MC, but since this is my daily driver the M was not a viable option.

The M50i is a great option for us enthusiasts who love the M Performance vehicles but need to maintain a daily driver.

The X5M would not viable for the occassional commute from Queens NY to Manhattan. The M50i on the other hand is a daily driver with a lot more power than the 40i.

Let's be real here, an M car is an M car, anything else is just an X5 with some M styling queues and performance add ons.

Nothing wrong with M performance. I knew that buying mine. Would I love the X5M, of course but I saved over $20k for a reason. Compromise.

I get that some will say no way it's not an M car, others will say it's in between, but technically bmws website when you go to order the car, M50i is under the M setup, combined with the M competition. If you google it, many websites will argue it is "every bit an M car" where others will say absolutely not.

You basically can find info in today's day in age to back up whatever your claim/stance/opinion is.

Thoughts?
I have a '21 M50i and IMO, it's all day an "M" car! This is because every major component was touched and / or massaged by the M division. If BMW slaps an M on the rear, it's an M car.
PS: I've owned M cars since my new '99 M3 and also had an '18 M5 before this one.

I am in the market currently to purchase X5 40i M sport package and M sport plus package dravit grey color. I cannot afford true BMW completion model as that is a well over 100K.

I am planning to install a custom quad exhaust and maybe even a grill from X5 completion package. I hope that it will fit. I am willing to give a few thousand to a body shop if it means that they have to modify the car to fit the quad exhaust and competition grill.

I would never tell anyone I drive an M car. I love my car though and do feel like it stands out a little more.

Whatever bud, to each his own! I'm putting in my order tomorrow for a '24 X6M Comp which is a "top of food chain M"! However, IMO, any BMW w/ an M slapped on the rear by BMW, is an M to me, period....

How's that? We all have to deal w/ the times and changes to the industry. An M car is still and always will be a stellar performer

As much BMW put M in front of the number, it is NOT an M car. Please go drive X5M, you will see the huge difference. It may not be what you want, but the difference is not small

In typical BMW tradition, the reliable M model will be desirable and maintain value. Cannot say the same about non M. Look at E46M3 or E90M3 today, good condition one with manual gear box are at $40K-$45k range if you can even find one in good condition. E82 1M is like $60k now. They are trending upward. The same generation of non M, say E46 330ZHP, or E90 335is, E82 135M, they are are like $8k-15K. The non reliable M, like E60 M5 with SMG, no one wants

I had X6M and X4M CE, now have over 3k miles on 2024 X6 M60i (drove from performance center). It has the M engine, M mirrors, M logo everywhere. It's a great car. But it's not an M car. At performance center my car to drive during activities was a brand new X6M CE. It was a completely different car. My X6M was very different from current M60i. Power, steering, suspension, sound, all are different.

My 2 cents: M60i is not an M car.

As was said before, it is an M model in that it is marketed by BMW-M however it is not an M car in the traditional sense. Nowadays BMW-M vehicles are broken down into three different groups: High-Performance (these are what we think of as M cars), Electrified-Performance and Performance. The descriptors of each are:

High-Performance: Legendary vehicles fully developed and engineered for performance-obsessed drivers.

Electrified-Performance: Electrified visionaries pushing the limits of power and innovation.

Performance: Road-ready vehicles enhanced with the epic engineering of BMW M.

The Performance vehicles are based on the regular series vehicles which some tweaks to the suspension and in some instances engine changes. The High-Performance vehicles are a different series with major differences in the suspension and some other areas.

Agreed in a sense, but nothing is really "traditional" anymore. A traditional M car was my new '99 M3, because that was the only 3 series M worked on. Now, they have their hands in taking a traditional M, and detuning to make more money for the marque. However, IMO, it's still an M car to me, I consider them entry level M cars. I think the only "posers" are M-Sports, but at least they don't wear the badge on the rear .

I think that is where you are misunderstanding the M Performance line. They do not take a traditional M car and detune it. They start with the regular Series vehicle and make some modifications.

Agreed. The are also many changes to “full” M. The engines, brakes, suspension, chassis reinforcements, cooling, seats and other interior and iDrive enhancements to make them more track ready. That’s a common misconception that a Mxxi engine is just a detuned version. The S engines in a M is built completely different internally for track purposes.

I think that depends on the series, but regardless, it's an M engine, M brakes, M suspension, M exhaust, etc. on most entry to mid level M cars. I'm ordering a '24 X6M comp, had an '18 M5 and had other previous "full" M cars if you will, but still consider the lesser M models an M non the less. I think there really is no right or wrong here, it's all a matter of ones opinion and to each his own gents!
