Brake controller necessary?
New to towing. X45E manual says max trailer load without brakes is 1653 lbs, but towing capacity with brakes is 5952. I towed an unloaded trailer (1400 lbs) yesterday and the braking performance was fine. I’m putting a 4 seat UTV on it (1700 lbs). So combined weight of 3,100 or so. I assume I need a brake controller. Thinking of the Curt echo Bluetooth one. https://www.curtmfg.com/dm/echo-mobile-brake-controller Someone said I don’t need one at all because the X5 brakes are adequate. Manual seems to say otherwise. Thoughts on the curt echo, others, none? Thanks

I think the legal limit is 3000# for trailer brakes so you are right on the line. I’m not sure I’d bother until you get above 4000# though.
I have a redarc controller and tow 5-6000# a couple times a summer. |

legal limits are different from what your car can handle. I would highly recommend using the manufacturer recommendation on the limits. Going about 150% over the limit without brakes doesn’t look like a good idea
