the X5 dilemma

never had fancy cars and somehow got myself into a G21 M340i and then scratched the V8 itch and got a M550i with DHP which was so much better but thought it bounced around like a boat

told myself not to test an X5 but they look so good, tested a 45e with HK and air suspension and i was stunned at how much better the suspension was and how refined it was. now i want to scratch the X5 itch but where i am the top model is an M50D and i am trying hard to forget today's encounter

there were a few downsides though - got ragdolled around by crosswinds, HK was no match vs B&W, rear middle seat is rock hard (i have 3 teens)

My experience with the x5 m50 is that it bounces around just like the m550 does. (I’ve owned both).

Maybe it was the air suspension that you liked. Others would have to comment more on that one. But if you are after air suspension then the 50e comes standard or m60 with optional air. Not sure if a 40i can be optioned with air internationally but in US it cannot.

I guess it depends on what “bounce around like a boat” mean. 5 series will be more bumpy, if that means bounce around. X5 will have softer ride just because of the suspension travel and ground clearance. No way x5 will handle nearly the same as 5 series, after they are the same platform, one is like 1+ft taller. But yes there are people here will tell you adding weight and height will make a car handle better

You also get some adjustability with the air suspension...in sport mode, lowering the ride height does make some differences.
