Performance Tires in Cold Conditions - Do I need to be Concerned?

'24 X6 M60i - this is my first car with performance tires, Continental PremiumContact 6 SSR on the staggered 21" setup on 915M wheels. I have read that that you should absolutely not drive in them in below freezing weather, definitely not in ice or snow. I am in Northwest Arkansas and to my knowledge, switching to winter wheel/tire setup is not a common thing to do here. But our winters are extremely unpredictable. Earlier this week, we had lows in the 20s for about 3 mornings and they seemed to do fine. Do I have a real concern or worry driving on these tires this winter? There are 700 miles on them right now.

20F?? If snow isn’t common in your area, go to all season. 20F means there is definitely going to be ice in road, max summer perf tire will do very poor in ice. I have solely been using summer tire for the last 20 years, even I will say summer tire isn’t the right tire for 20F.

What is the day time average temp?

I agree on the all seasons if you don't want to change tires each season. The summer compound gets really hard during cold temps (less than 40 F). Even if it's dry, you will lose stopping power and grip in general.

The lowest temperature was 20F earlier this week-but it was a dry cold, it was not icy or snowy. Sounds like I will be in the market for some new tires sooner than later.. :\

There are no all season tires in 21" staggered setup unless you go with some no name brand. And I don't recommend using summer tires in freezing temperatures. Tire compound can crack. Your handling will suffer, breaking distance will increase and so on. Just google "summer tires in winter".

Not necessarily no name brand, but different size than BMW OE. I am waiting for Black Friday for some (hopefully) promotions on Michelins A/S.

Staggered 21s are very painful with tires unfortunately. I had to go with slightly different size from OEM tire to get Michelin A/S

Sounding more and more like I should’ve went with the more practical route of the 20” square setup instead. Appreciating the feedback thus far.

Or buy two fronts, 9.5x21”, and run square 275/40R21. All season for this size is readily available. It is the rear, 315/35R21 that is difficult

Actually I think there is 21" all season tires available but I can't find them anywhere. It's Yokohama Geolander X-CV.
Check specs for yourself.

I went with 275/45/21 and 315/40/21 it just makes overall heigh of the car 1 inch taller.

More like 1/2”. Diameter grows by 1”. Half of radius.

Any difference in how the car drive?

Sorry! Yes you are correct!

No difference no issues with any warnings or anything like that. No rubbing.

This actually came from another user on this forum so I am not first one to do it.

I was able to get Michelin Primacy A/S and they are much better for my climate. Softer ride compared to P-Zero RTF as you might imagine. I like them a lot for family car.

Thank you. I asked because I am doing exact what I said earlier. I am getting 741 fronts for all 4 corner square setup to replace 740 20” square, simple because 741 look so good. And having another tire options just in case.

We did last winter in Chicago on half worn continentals. It was manageable. They are at wear indicators in the back so I am getting a new set installed in a week. As there are no all season options, I chose to use two different all season tire models front to back. Will see how it goes.
I probably wouldn't rush to replace brand new continentals in Arkansas.

What, if any, programming settings in iDrive do you make for different tire sizes? For accuracy of speedometer and odometer? This may be covered in other discussions too. I will have to be more careful on colder days and not get out when we have wintry precipitation. Never cared for that anyway. This discussion has been valued fir the different options provided. Never thought I’d have to be so interested in tires!

Idrive setting does not know what tires or wheel you are using. You set it to match what you have, it really in provides pressure recommendations. There is no way the car can detect wheel and tire. There are hundreds of not thousands of combinations, bmw will not and is not able characterize each combination to give an remote accuracy of what is in the car.

The idrive in my X6M recognizes when I change wheels. Not sure if all the other models do.

This is because it see new TPMS, which is mounted inside the wheel.
