Isn't that how it was in the beginning? 2020 X5M Competition vs 2021 X5M with Comp Package currently?

They need to make up their minds on this. Either competition is a package or a trim, no need to flip flop it every year.

The only M car that honestly deserves to have "Competition" as a separate model/trim versus a package was the M2 because it received an entirely different engine and numerous upgrades, which was a rare and unique situation anyways due to the EU-Regulations that the N55 would not have passed.

It would be interesting to learn what led to the "everything old is new again" turnaround. Alas - we may never know.

If I had a nickel with how much stuff BMW would flip around between trainings.
Really gets confusing when trying to relay the info to customers.

They probably read the forums and saw that magic "20%" audience they want to cater too and make feel happy.

Can I ask bmw to just add a small c next to the M badge like M4c M4cs and M4gts I don't need the whole "COMPETITION" in big white letters. Thanks

It is no flip flop, it is consistent with the strategy that was announced several years back. Competition is now a model designation as part of the hierarchy of ///M cars:

base -> competition -> CS -> CSL

The M2 is the oddball here, where the base was not produced alongside the competition when the later was launched, and this simply has to do with emissions compliance (the N55 was too old).

Or how about just make the M car :
We already have X**M40 or M340 which fills the gap. What's the point of launching Mand M comp at same time.

I'm confused, hasn't it always been like this? The only "Competition Package" I remember is on the E90/E92 M3, every other time the "Competition" was used has been it's own model:

M2 Competition
X3/X4 M Competition
M5 Competition
M8 Competition
X5/X6 M Competition

All are their own trim and not a package.

This doesn't bug or affect me since everyone is just following each other (AMG-S vs. M Competition vs. Audi Sport Performance) but it's confusing when this comes out stating BMW is going to do something that they are already doing.

This must be a USA only news story. In Europe they already are X5M/X6M Competition and not «Competition pack»...

Consistent use of the nomenclature through the M-model range here at least. Strange that it's called the Comp pack in the US :

X3/X4M were initially launched with a M and Competition models and then moved to having just the M model with a Competition package available for $7k. It's currently this way on the BMW USA configurator.

Ahh...guess this thread really applies to the U.S. Canada always had the competition models as it's own trim rather than a package. Makes sense now but confusing they would do this in different regions and not others.

The competition has always been a package optional with the base model until the F87 competition.

Prior to that, they have a option code for the competition package on the configuration sheet.

I believe the forced introduction of the F87C with engine upgrade in mid 2018 is exactly when they decide to seperate the comp and base more, and thus creating and solidifying the M hierarchy - base -> comp -> CS -> CSL

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

So they gonna make a Competition trim level instead of offering a package (which give you the 'competition' badge)?

Back to the way it was last year. Trim level to package and now back to trim level.
