I don't know how special it can be regardless of options (or lack thereof) when it's one of the biggest volume selling models to begin with from BMW.

Other than the red accent strips on the grill, the rest of the package looks pretty nice. If they offered the wheels, paint and interior as Individual options on the X5, I am guessing a lot of people would buy them.

The red accent strips makes the front look a little too bloody to me. However, this might not be for the US market, but might appeal to other markets. For instance, I believe the Chinese market is now as big as Germany and US combined for BMW, so I am sure that market influences some of the design. For instance vermilion is known as 'chinese red'.

My 2 cents worth...

Doesn't make it any better. Just shows they are stubborn.
...And just because I criticize, doesn't make me a hater. The M2CS in my garage along with a bunch of M3s suggests otherwise.

The red touches aren't for me. I like the interior a lot

Enough with the editions already! As a bonus to the grill, which's reminiscent of a DIY project gone wrong, you get the braided-rat-tail-accent-piping on all your seats.

Love the whining about haters and calling circa 2005 blacked out with red accents 'design evolution'. This 'special edition' is fantastic if you want your 92K BMW to look like a clapped out Civic.

These vehicles especially the grill treatments are extremely dated, almost laughably so at this point.
Things change regardless of what guys living in the past may be able to accept. Time to embrace what automotive evolution is yielding. We have never had products even close to what is available right now.

With all the chip shortages, I would think manufacturers would look to streamline their lineups. I heard the shortage is here for the next 2+ years

These special editions have higher margins and in a way allows the company to buy chips at a higher price without effecting profits as much.

Kind of an interesting update; near as I can tell:

And it is still hideous. Some things do not get better with time.

Meh, who cares as this is a super low volume, high $$$ vehicle. A lot of opinions from people that are not even in the buying demographics of a $100k+ vehicle. Those that can realistically afford it will know if they like it and want to buy it or not, everything else is white noise from the peanut gallery. BMW has got a lot bigger problems with high-volume affordable vehicles like the new 2 series. The 3 & 4 M series is right behind in design concerns.

The answer to "who cares" is in your response:

"super low volume, high $$$ vehicle[s]"
"high-volume affordable vehicles like the new 2 series"
"3 & 4 M series is right behind in design concerns"

If the BMW gross-design stick were only hitting a niche X5, then no problem ... but BMW is shitting up just about everything, as you noted.

I'd add:

✘ New X3/4M design looks like a hipster moustache / prius look

And the new 2er performance parts looks is ....

So, if it were just the X5 SE then you're right; but it's not, and the X5 was the last bastion of good design left, thus seeing it going down the same poop smear design path as everything else ...

Well, we all should care.

Well at least we know why we can't order red brakes anymore. They were stockpiling them for these.

I know we are all different and have different likes and dislikes but at least for me, excluding the giant “Nike” swoosh on the side, I don’t think the car looks all that bad!

That prius looks like the new X7 facelift. Which I assume will make its way to the X5 eventually.

So what's the demand for these? My dealer is getting one, but I would think that it's going to be near 85k. Has anyone reserved theirs? CA keeps asking if I know anyone, but I think the market for these is probably very niche.

I can't remember BMW doing any special editions on the X5 except maybe the E53 X5 Neiman Marcus Edition.
