Arrow Show us your subwoofer

Like the title says, show me your aftermarket trunk subwoofer setup. I have a Bimmertech amp and Focal speakers on the way but I'm looking to add an additional sub to the trunk. I'm not looking to go too drastic as far as a JL audio W7 but I would like to feel my music a bit.

I'm looking at sub, box, amp all in one but I've never heard one of those setups in person.

RF300-12 bought + Technic harness to install on top of the B&W system.

Taking delivery in a few days, will post pics of the install in a few weeks when I get around to it! Excited.

I'm considering a 2020 X5 that doesn't have the HK sound system after having several BMWs that have had it. I know this is a very difficult question to answer but to upgrade to a similar sounding system to HK what kind of price are we talking? Thanks in advance

Doing the Focal/Bavaudio route with the amp upgrade that is all plug and play would probably get you pretty close. The factory HK is very disappointing to the point I will probably be doing the Focal upgrade and adding a sub as well.

My Focals arrived from Germany. It took about 2 weeks to arrive but the cost savings were significant. I paid about $500 for this whole set.

All I need is my Bimmer-tech amp to finally show up. Once I have the amp and speakers installed I will see what kind of subwoofer setup I need.

Can you share the vendor information for the speakers?

Sure thing. They have a store on eBay as well but I went though them directly.

Just use google translate or the translate option on your PC.

Their email is:
kontakt@extremeaudio.de

Good luck and be patient. It may take 2 weeks to arrive.

I was actually watching YouTube reviews on that one. They have two versions, a 300watt and a 500 watt. Does the bass from yours really fill the cabin? Even if there’s a little rattle I don’t mind.

Fills up quite nice. A little boomier than expected for a sealed sub, but no complaints. No rattles at all!

What version do you have? 300 or 600? Install it yourself?

I got the Rockford Fosgate P300-12 Punch 12" 300-Watt Powered Subwoofer.

Yep - installed it myself. Didn't take very long, as the harness and easy access to the B&W booster amp was super easy. The longest time it took was tapping into the battery, ground, and routing the cables in an organized way to the back, taping everything up so its clean, etc.

I'm interested in tackling this myself but want to be able to remove the sub for camping trips etc.

Have you installed a "quick release" mechanism so that the sub can be removed easily and safely?

Well, the sub already has a sort of quick release mechanism because the plug where remote/power/ground goes in is a sort of harness. You unplug that and the RCA plug and the sub is free to go!

Thank you. I may end up going with the 500 watt version and installing a volume control knob for that one sub. Id rather have too much power with a controller than too little.

Reminds me of days past. I had a Ford Explorer where I ran a high end system, Alpine head unit, hidden Alpine 6 disc changer, Alpine amp driving Boston Acoustics components, MB Quart mids, and Rockford Fosgate amp driving dual Rockford subs in a custom enclosure with a volume control knob. Best sound system I ever had.

Hats off to you guys and everyone who has gone through with these sound upgrades. I just haven’t been brave enough to do these upgrades with these new, integrated systems.

I’m on the same boat as you brother. Last audio upgrade I did was in my e46 coupe. I had 2 kicker 12” solo barics with a 1500 watt Phoenix Gold amp and a capacitor. I still have a hole in my right eardrum from it.

My past few cars had garbage audio! This time around I purchased my X5 which I really like A LOT. So I figured lemme add some OEM+ touches. I’m in my 40s now so I’m not looking to shake the block but I do like to pump up some old school hip hop and r&b once in a while. The Bimmertech amp, focal replacement speakers, and an additional sub will definitely fit the bill while maintaining the OEM look and feel of the vehicle.

Dude - reading this gave me mega flashbacks. I actually had an E36 318i where you could actually swap out head units. Had a sweet Alpine head unit with the same exact orange LEDs as BMW interior + matching graphical Alpine EQ unit (forget the model number) mounted on the bottom cubby. It looked so sweet.

RF 4 channel amp powering (first) Boston Acoustic and then swapped for MB Quarts. THen added a mono RF amp to power 2x 12" sealed subs on the trunk. I had to actually cut out the metal piece separating the trunk from the main cabin through the middle armrest. Added some felt to cover, but that way the bass could get in the main cabin.

As you said - best sound system I've ever had.

Very nice. I noticed the bass completely drops off once you go behind the driver's seat, which seems odd given B&W cost. I like the minimalistic look off your setup, although I'm searching for something to reside in the spare tire area kind of like the Bose system on m you old Q7. Those spare tire subwoofers used to be a thing.

I think Kicker makes some sub boxes that fit inside the spare tire well - and I think they are powered too! I didn't want to sacrifice the spare.

If I need the trunk space I'll have to unplug the sub and put it away, bit of a hassle but hasn't happened yet! I'll just tell the fam to pack less.

You're right about the B&W bass - I noticed it immediately. It's only got 2 underseat subs and they aren't all that large or sufficiently powered which is why the extra 12" does wonders.

Good luck!

I'll trust your judgment since you're from DR. All of my Dominican friends here in NY are top-notch audio experts. Their in-car audio can be heard for blocks haha.

I'm a bit skeptical about leaving a sub under the trunk carpet. I think the mat would really filter out a lot of bass.

It's true the carpet will mute some of the bass, but if you're looking to round out the low end and maybe add some punch I think it'll still make a difference.

Good luck!
