Getting mine back today for the 50+ mile test driving, now that they changed the fluid. All covered under the power train I took post 50k on the clock.

Update!
The fluid change significantly reduced the issue, however, it's still occurs on occasion. Bringing back tomorrow for a new transfer case...

My 2020 x6 m50 seems to have transfer case issues. Grinding noise at slow speed turns. Took it to a dealer and they claim BMW has 3 step process to diagnose this problem: 1. Id have to replace all 4 tires, 2. If tires are not the problem than transfer case fluid flush is next. 3. Replace transfer case if step 1 or 2 does not resolve the problem. So basically I have to spend about $2500 on new tires before they will even look at the problem🤯🤦*♂️🤦*♂️. Unbelievable! car is still under warranty.

Can you tell them if 1 doesn’t solve the issue, they will pay for the tires ? Or they first replace tires, if that fixes the issue, you then pay them? Sounds fair?

That was my thought exactly. I feel like the should have a set of wheels and replace with mine in order to diagnose the problem. Its BMW service after all.
Service advisor admitted that this is most likely transfer case issue but have to follow the steps to get to it. I will replace the tires but when the time comes. Im also thinking about trading the car in for something different (possibly IX) so for now im just going to leave it as is. |

Agreed. This smells like a money grab. If one person decides not to pursue a warranty repair or buys a set of tires from the dealer then that's more money in their pocket at the cost of a couple of words.

I always order from tire rack, ship to my local mechanic and have him mount.

Actually BMW is often quite competitive with pricing. When I was looking a few years ago they were within a few dollars of Tire Rack, Discount Tire, etc.

When you are ready Marty go to the BMW Tire Center link under Service & Parts on your dealer's web site. That should give you a price your dealer will charge although you can try and negotiate for q lower one.

My CPO 2019 xDrive 50i M-sport (21" staggered setup) with 40k miles is going in for the fluid change step next week. CA who I work with regularly knows the SIB, and like others have said, you have to work the process. Post fluid change if after a few months/500 miles if issue remains/returns, then they'll replace the X-fer case under the CPO warranty, which I fortunately extended out to 84 months/unlimited miles. In my situation the tires not an issue as both the previous and current set of tires were sold and installed by this dealer (at lower than Tire Rack net cost).
Would like to track down more information on the rumor some 2019 X5 X-drive vehicles were apparently delivered with incorrect fluid in the transfer case. |

Wait, did I read the 2nd part right? "factory filled transfer case oil does NOT meet BMW specification" . so BMW factory screwed up here?

Yes, for a time the wrong fluid was being used.

Thanks for all the info, my wife's 2020 x5 M50i starting having stuttering issues for the past 6 months, finally dropped it off yesterday after realizing the factory warranty ends in 2 months. Tech confirmed it was the transfer case, flushed the fluid and still not resolved but says we have to drive it for 125 miles and bring it back next week and they can replace the transfer case. Hopefully nothing improves over the next 125 miles so I won't have issues getting the replacement lol.

- A vibration, more like a shudder, felt under your butt and or steering wheel when at parking lot speeds with the steering wheel turned pretty much or all the way locked in either clockwise or counter clockwise position - A vibration, more like a shudder when reversing out of a garage or parking spot and then turning the steering wheel The X5 is a dang smooth car so it's easy to feel vibrations but the Xfer case vibrations are unlike a wheel out of balance because it's felt at parking lot speeds, like below 10mph. Anyway that was my experience on a former X3 but from reading people's X5 posts, it seems the same. There are around three different Xfer case posts on this site, find them and read them to see what people are saying |
