Error message: "Right rear seat unlocked" on X5 with 3rd row seat

I have a 2019 G05 X5 with 3rd row seat. I started getting an error message "Right rear seat unlocked'. I don't know how to clear this message. I don't know how to 'lock' the seats in the third row. I've tried:

-folding down flat the right side seat and putting back upright
-folding down flat both the left and right side seats and putting back upright
-tilting the right seat forward (for third row seat access) and putting the seat back
-tilting both the left and right seats forward and putting the seats back
-pushing the reset button on the left and right side rear seats

After all those things I still get the "Right rear seat unlocked" error message.

Any ideas how to make that message go away?

Thanks.

Someone else recently posted with the same error msg. I think they were about to take the car back to the dealer and was going to have them deal with it but you might try searching for it. It was just within the past week or two. In the meantime, try rebooting iDrive by pressing and holding in the volume knob for 30 seconds.

I had exactly the same error and had to have the dealer fix.
Hope this helps.

I have a December 2019 build (2020 model) with 3rd row seats. Have this issue even after being back at the deal for reset. Looks like the entire back bench gets replaced according to the dealer (BMW Bellevue)

X7 apparently also is these issues.

Nice one BMW.

Keep us posted... I ordered a G05 with 3rd row, PCD Feb 21st, so I'll let you know if this is an issue on new builds as well. Fingers crossed it's resolved.

Does anyone knows if with the app Bimmerlink can we clear those errors?
I had already once the same rear "right seat unlocked problem", went to the dealer, solve it and now same issue is back again.
is there any seat position reset like in the old generations?

I had the same problem and the driver side seat just froze in a semi locked position. The dealer had it for the day reset something and renewed one wiring connection and it now seems to work although I don't tend to move the seat much just in case...

also upgraded software which was a bonus

Doesn’t BMW have quality control?
Something like this shouldn’t have left the factory with this kind of issue
We had issues with our soon to be replaced 2019 X5
And we had issues with the loaner 2020 X7 they gave us and had to take that in for service
This is not a good sign

Quick update on my Dec 2020 build that has this problem.

After 3 trips to dealer with this problem, car now checked in for a week at dealer (BMW Bellevue, WA) -- they are taking entire 2nd row seat out of vehicle, removing leather, cushions, wiring, latches, sensors and then replacing the frame which is believed to be the problem. This is guidance given by BMW Field Engineer who was visiting at time of last visit when they looked at problem again. Similar issues as X7 apparently. Head foreman involved for this week while car is in workshop.

Totally freaked + pissed that the rear seat needs to be torn down and rebuilt in workshop after being brand new from factory!

Will update once I get the car back.

The seats do have a mind of their own when you start trying to do anything. The "rear seat unlocked" for me is when the manual latch has been pulled and then the seat simply thrown forward. When I put the seat back into place and replaced the fabric latch pull, it was fine.

But out of the 10 times I have used the 3rd row, I have had to fiddle back and forth/start again with the 3rd row/middle row/front row circa 7 times...I would not want to do that every day!

One way to have these seats go crazy is to press the buttons multiple times or hold them down. It throws them into a state of confusion and that's where the error usually occurs. They're meant to be pressed once and then allowed to go through their entire cycle of motion before hitting anything else.

This has happened to me today and tried everything to resolve this issue. Anybody else had this problem and found a simple cure?

I've asked the same question many times.

I'm on my 2nd G05 which is a 2019 build, after the first (a 2018 build l) had several major issues plus ongoing software issues. These issues made building the case that the car was not "fit for purpose" really easy.

Definitely NOT good enough for a car people expect A grade quality and luxury.

The lesson I've learnt is I will NEVER buy a 1st production year car again, I'll wait 2-3 years into Production and let them sort out their issues. Will also cast my net broader and consider an MB and maybe others.

I have a Dec 2019 build. It's been back to BMW Bellevue 6 times including today. Not fixed even after software upgrade. I have another appointment Thursday next week with BMW area manager on site. Incredible how BMW cannot fix this since December 2019.

Enough is enough. Why not take advantage of our states Lemon Law to get you into a new vehicle. You've already surpassed the Washington State Lemon Law requirement and then some. https://www.atg.wa.gov/general-lemon-law

Closing this one out. After 5 visits and a few attempts to resolve, they finally fixed it by doing a "hall sensor" replacement and a seat related software upgrade.

Had the rear seat not latch problem as well .Took it into the dealer and found to be a software fault. Had the software updated to O7/20.25 which fixed the problem. However the update did break other things in the car. However dealer was helpful and eventually got everything working again.

Update from my 9/3 update: the error has shown up again.

This car is clearly not going to be fixed by BMW. Does anyone know how to get BMW North America to help. I think it's time to replace the vehicle - any guidance or suggestions on how to proceed will be appreciated.

When say a window regulator gets 'confused', the procedure is to hold the button for a certain time (think it was like 10-seconds) which will cause it to recalibrate itself. There might be something like that on the seat motion.

Some of those things use like a stepping motor, and if it forgets what step it's on, or doesn't 'see' the limit sensor telling it after a certain number of steps, it indicates an error.

Don't have a third row, so can't say more, but I also haven't read the manual on that feature.

Rear seats freeze with message

Hi
I had this about 24hrs after I collected the car, my 14 yr old was showing me how they worked , when the seats got stuck and that message confirmed it.

So rang a tech I knew, he said they do this, they have no idea why, but he thinks they just get confused!!!
So the fix, move all the seats you can to there max and back again, I had to move front seat fully forward, and the section in the back the same, and then suddenly the frozen seats started to work.
So I think that's the fix
