Drive Recorder 40s limitation - why ? hackable?

I wonder why the very cool drive recorder is limited to only 40 seconds...

was there any legal issues ?

It seems to be recording 20 second pre-event , which means it is recording all the time, I mean it stays on all the time..

so why not store longer files on an external sd card just like Tesla ?

It is nice to have in case of big crash, but if someone scratch or bump my car on the parking lot, I have nothing to rewind...

it is such a let-down / tease...

I hope coder will find a way to hack the feature to save to one of the USB slot located all around the X5 ! especially for us owner of the 45e... which got plenty of battery capcity to run these 24/7.

The car is not recording anything when it's switched off. You can't change that.

I agree that BMW should have (and should still) extended the functionality to include some amount of event triggered parking recording, taking into account monitored battery charge levels to set the limits on this functionality. For example, an average of even just 2 hours of off-state recording would likely handle 80% of the riskiest parking situations (malls, etc.)

But, it is called a Drive Recorder, not a Parking Recorder, so they at least set the expectations with the name correctly.

In terms of longer than -20/+20 second individual saved drive recordings, my best guess is that BMW anticipated taking away in MY2021 the relatively large "hard disk" storage that MY2019 and MY2020 have and they have, thus, limited time and storage to be consistent in all models. In practice, -20/+20 is quite enough for the intended accident/bad behaviour recording purpose.

I have not read much data on the why they removed the storage on the 2021 year model... I reallywish they would just offer option to put these things back on the car.. what a shame.. I hope they will offer 2021 owner a way to retrofit these things in the future...

maybe they changed the storage type. some memory types can be done to failure sooner (Tesla knows about this) than others.

Naw, they're just being cheap. It's nothing related to the EEC thing in Tesla. They removed options like the heated/cooled cupholders, sensatec dash, and the crystal volume knob button.

I have heated/cooled cupholders and sensated dash on my 2021 45e - the hard disk thing is a different kind of change. I believe there still must be a hard disk in the system for storing the maps, driving recorder videos, software upgrades etc.

They removed the options for which there is scarce supply from their low margin markets such as the U.S. - they are still available in most other countries.

Why cant they just utilise the USB port in the centre arm rest - I'd plug a drive into that USB and get constant recording while driving - that would be perfect!

what a shame to have all the hardware and just not implement the feature, my guess is a 'legality issue' in some countries.

yeah, that's being cheap. BMW probably did so to keep margins during Covid but hasn't reverted back for who knows what reason. SSD's are cheap now for a quality one so I wish we had the option to upgrade it from the start

edit: it's probably soldered to a main board anyway so we couldn't upgrade it if we wanted

I had a dashcam in all my past cars, but in this one I skipped it. After seeing the video quality and and 20 second limit (when you see something and decide a little later you should have kept a copy of footage, it's sometimes too late) I decided to get my old dashcam mounted back, but I have to review the fusebox and find switched fuse. Has anyone hard wired dashcam on their G05?
