Sold my M60i - Here's why!

Wanted to give a quick run down of my short 5 months of ownership of a 2024 X5 M60i. Ultimately I sold it this weekend and I have to say I don't regret it at all. I bought it thinking it would be a great blend of performance and practicality, but at the end of the day there were far too many annoyances to make me really love the car.

The good: I loved the looks, the comfort, the power (mine was tuned) and the overall handling (other than lift off over-steer which was a bit unnerving)

The bad: To make a long story short, the complete lack of exhaust note was disappointing, the Idrive system was confusing and difficult to use (for me) and the start/stop system drove me nuts. The ventilated seats were also stupid (I live in FL) and for a relatively large SUV, there's absolutely nowhere to put anything other than in the cup holder. The brakes also warped and shuddered badly with only 3k miles on it. I bought the car thinking it would be my send off to the V8, but it didn't really feel like a car with a V8. If I were to do it again, i'd get a regular 40i and modify it.

In the end, it was less about me not liking the X5 and more about me not being able to justify having a 100k dollar car that I didn't truly love. I was hoping it would make me feel like my 07 335i did back in the day and it just didn't do it for me. Not trying to offend anyone, just truly wanted to share my feedback! I still love BMWs and the brand.

Welcome any comments/questions!

You pretty much nailed the main areas of complaint with the LCI here. Still a great car but if I had to list 3 short comings of the LCI, these would be them....

I did the same thing, for many of the same reasons.

The lack of auto start/stop button ruined it all for me. I did not want to drive in sport mode all of the time, and I cannot stand the start/stop. For driving in the snow/ice/winter, it is just not a good idea.

Also, I agree that it did not really feel that much more powerful than the 40i, and sport mode is not as annoying during routine in-town driving as the M60i.

Loved the looks (M60i), and there is a lot of good there. But, I could not justify the price for the way I felt about it.

Sounds like you made the best decision for the situation, no need to be bothered every day with a vehicle that doesn't meet your needs/wants, etc. have you gotten a replacement or what are you planning on getting?

I ended up trading it on a new Sierra 1500. I plan on keeping my performance and utility vehicles separate from now on! (will probably get a M2)

Good luck with it. (And the future M2).

Interesting and best of luck. I bought a 2020 GMC 1500 Denali. Carbon black over black and loaded. It was my daily and I loved it as I always wanted a truck. My wife hated everything about it. It lasted 9 months

An all in one vehicle is never going to give you what a dedicated full boat performance car like an M2, M3, M5, Z06 will.
I will be keeping my M60i for a while and hopefully picking up an Eray in the not to distant future.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Good to hear these less positive type of accounts as well. having swapped out of a bunch of cars in 2023 - I know the feeling you had quite well.

Question tho -
Why not use the individual sport mode to configure a comfort equivalent in settings but disables the auto start/stop.

It's interesting to hear you say it didn't feel more powerful than the 40i. My M50i felt like a totally different vehicle in terms of power than the 40i, and the LCI squad here swear up and down that the M60i feels way more powerful than the M50i.

I can understand the "too much money tied up into it to not love it" sentiment, really well. I felt that way about an f150 platinum I had, fully loaded super luxury truck, but it just never did it for me. It wasn't fast, the suspension was wallowy and floaty, and while the engine sounded good, it wasn't that satisfying. I had come out of a sport SUV and a Corvette, I figured it would give me kind of the best of both worlds, but it ended up being just an expensive truck that wasn't for me.

I have since stuck with sport versions of trucks and SUVs and been much happier.

It doesn't work if the engine/drivetrain is not in sport mode. Putting the drivetrain in comfort mode engages the auto start/stop function.

Ah did not know that. Usually my issues with sport mode is the tranny in sport and holding the revs. I haven’t noticed a big difference in the engine setting. I guess it’s notable and annoying on the m60.

How about this for a simple solution. When you come to a stop where you think the ASS will be problematic, just click the gear selector to "S", then when you start moving again click the selector to "D". Very simple and easy to do without looking or much thought.

OP, sorry to hear that the M60i didn't live up to your expectations. That car has a docile and quiet mannerism about it.

As for the ASS, it's my understanding that it can be coded OFF via bimmercode.

Think a lot of people don’t want to do this type of workaround in their 100k car. Having to do this toggle would just be a daily punch in the gut for the OP. (I think)

LCI / Newest idrive cannot be coded per the latest I’ve read on this forum.

I feel your pain. I purchased an X7 M60i and while I loved the V8, the start stop pissed me off so much, I decided f'this. I contacted BMW about it and of course there is nothing they can do. I figured out that if you disable traction control it keeps the engine running, but you have to remember to do it each time and if you engage assisted driving it re-engages traction starting the cycle all over again. I had it 4 months. Took a loss, but idk. I was driving a $117k V8 that got crappy gas mileage(not that I exactly cared), shut off all the time and was overkill for how we were using it. Basically a long haul cruiser. It's a great vehicle and we enjoyed the two previous X7 40i's, because I could code the start/stop off.

Decided to give the X5 another try and picked up a 50e. We are enjoying it and I love the mixed power train. I love sitting somewhere and it's dead quiet with everything running, heat, a/c etc. The system is super smooth with the transition from electric to ice. And it's almost as quick as the X7 was. My master plan is to get the wife to take it over, she didn't want to drive the X7, said it's too big. Then, like you, pick up a car. Something fun. Not sure yet.

That's every single stop, and it will shut off even before the vehicle has stopped moving, so switching drive modes is not worth it. It's much easier to just kind of pump the brake pedal - lift just enough for the engine to kick on but not enough for the vehicle to start moving. I do this all the time to make sure the climate control keeps running.
