Lower tailgate alternate release

Long story short, I think as I closed the lower tailgate a bit of plastic blew in (I was going to the recycling centre so had lots of cardboard and plastic in the boot). The car now can't decide whether it's shut or not (as in the warning sensors) but the top half thinks its open, and the button to open the lower tailgate isn't working.

I think if I could manually release the tailgate it pretty much fix itself. Any ideas how I might do that?

As a plan b, any UK buyers know what is covered under the Emergency assistance? Would they come out to my house?

If you look in:
>General X5 / X6 Topics
>G05/G06 Technical Training documents

Document 01 G05 Body.pdf, page 13, shows the emergency release ofor the lower section of tailgate.

I didn't have to locate the manual release in the end at all.

Turned out to be yesterday before I could get to it, but all the driving must have shaken the offending item (a twig) loose enough for the tail gates to work properly.

Managed to pry it the twig with some needle nose pliers - it was stuck quite good, presumably squished by the weight of the tailgate. Who'd have thought such a little item would cause so much grief!
