Garage List 2010 M5 [10.00]
2016 BMW 340xi M Sport [9.00] 2019 X5 50i M Sport [5.50] 2010 535xi [0.00] 2013 M5 [0.00] 2012 X5 M [0.00] |
45e Owners! Here here!! What's Your Upgrade Path?
Like many of you have done in the past after acquiring a new or new-to-you vehicle, I've often thought about my "Upgrade Path". For instance, here is my past upgrade path of X5 ownership over the years:
E53 X5 3.0 E53 X5 4.6is E53 X5 4.8is,...kept this one for a long time, abt 130k miles or more) E70 X5 4.4i Sport (I think it was a 2010) E70 X5 M (2010) E70 X5 M (2012),...kept this one for abt 60k miles! F15 X5 50i (2018) G05 X5 50i (2019) G05 X5 45e (2021),...still putting in the work! Although I really like the 45e,...I also keep a keen eye out for a well-optioned M50! Also, going back to the "M" version isn't totally out the picture,...I'm not sure if I want to go back to the back,...as often the hard thing to do is come back to lower model. Although I gave of my 2012 X5M for a newer and higher tech 50i,...it was hard giving up the "M Suspension" of the E70 X5 M. Those of you whom have had an M version of any BMW surely could understand my concerns on this. Now, at the moment, I see the 50e as my upgrade path! That said, how about you guys,...what's your upgrade path?

I went from 45e to the 50e, and so far I'm happy with that decision.
While the 45e is great, there's a noticeable performance difference with the 50e, so it does feel like I've been upgraded, even though the cars are effectively the same. |

My heart is with you, but my wallet can't justify it. The price increase + the loss of the $7500 credit just makes it unfeasible for me.

same. I looked into upgrading to 50e but the numbers weren’t as favorable as when I purchased my 45e in late 2020

After 3 years with the 45e and loving Electric mode, I'm going full EV for my next vehicle. Probably still 2 years out from making a move, but I'm contemplating Polestar 4, Rivian R2S, Q6 Etron or maybe the next gen X5 Electric model.

Two deciding factors for me.
1. How reliable and maintainable 45e is? This will likely dictate how long I will keep the car. 2. How good is EV charging infrastructure when I need to change from 45e? When 45e reaches a point it become unreliable as family car, if EV charging infra is good enough for family road trip, I will definite get EV as a "leg" car. If EV infra isn't ready by then, I will most likely go back to a reliable ICE as family car. I don't think I will get another PHEV unless it represents a financial good deal, like it was for MY22 45e

An M50i or M60i is a less than 5 minute fill up and you rock for 500 miles. |

while this technology may not agree with you for whatever reason(s), your bolded statement above is an indirect insult whether you realize it or not. it’s not welcomed in this forum FYI: the 45e also takes <5 minutes to fill up and can also go ~500 miles, so what’s your point? frankly, you’re coming off as a troll now. let’s not go there, eh? we’re all entitled to what we like. what works for some may not work for others, and that’s ok. no need to be condescending about others’ choices |

I certainly can't see a reason to 'upgrade' to anything else. The 45e is simply amazing in so many ways (ride quality, performance, handling as good or better than entry level muscle cars, smooth quite delivery of power, great HK sound system, nice interior, near unlimited gas mileage for city driving). I also really like the of the look of 45e and usefulness of the pre-LCI buttons. Everytime I look at the car I admire its beauty, and get tons of compliments. Maybe in the future if I needed something bigger I would get a PHEV version of the X7 (I love the PHEV capabilities in the X5 45e over the regular 40i). It would be very hard for me to want any other car than a 45e currently. |

My strategy is this: if my MY21 45e stays as reliable as it has been for the first 2 years, I will keep it until the new X5 comes out. 2027 I think. It could have passed 200K km at that point. And then I will either get a fully electric version if the EV infrastructure is good by then or again a PHEV which I’m currently fully happy with.

But a 50e is still $30k-$50k less than a comparably equipped Cayenne Hybrid (we've all seen the 326-page Porsche option list, hence the range), and in many areas, the 50e is superior (cargo space, electric range, technology). The 50e also offers identical 0-60 performance to the Cayenne Hybrid (not the turbo hybrid, obviously), although turns are a bit more fun in the Porsche. I want to like the Cayenne more as a self-proclaimed Porsche fan boy, but if I wanted to throw $150k+ at a car, I'd look at some variant of the 911. |

After a couple 911s and Cayennes as well as a Macan we are done with Porsche. They are all very cool vehicles but no longer have any appeal for us under their current pricing which has increased waaaaay in excess of inflation. I was very close to pulling the lever on another 911S about 2 1/2 years ago nicely equiped, all the most commonly ordered options, GT Silver, Carrera Classic wheels, gorgeous highly capable sports car. 122K would have bought it that day, decided to buy a couple days later and it was sold. The same 911S now with comparable options is going to cost at least 160K which is just ridiculous. |

I should have mentioned that we live in a high rise condo building where daily charging is next to impossible and a major PIA as it is for millions of others who live in appartments, inner cities with street parking etc. The home we left up north a number of years ago would have been able to charge 3 or 4 vehicles in secure climate controlled fashion perfect for evs/phevs which is a situation that not everyone enjoys or even looks for. I assure you that there are millions of folks who have no ability or opportunity for charging access and would share my perspectives. Last edited by cobramite; 09-19-2023 at 11:59 AM.. |

As for "charging crap",...I park in the drive way,...Open the garage door,...exit the X5 and plug in the charging cable, then go inside my house. So, it takes literally about 10-secs max! Hardly a hassle. As for the "V8",...like many here, I'm quite familiar with the TT 4.4i BMW engine! Just check out my list above. The only reason I was considering an "M50",..is because it looks do damn good! And it's about as close one can get to a full "X5 M"! I still may consider it...LOL!
