Transfer case issues

2019 X5. Last year was experiencing a slight shuddering at low speed when turning in drive or reverse. Dealer tested and confirmed and change the fluid per service bulletin SIB 20 02 20. That seemed to fix the problem.
Recently started up again a bit more severe. New dealer(I have moved) just informed me that they will replace transfer case under warranty. Just curious, is this a known problem and is there a new service bulletin?

I think I’m having this exact same issue in my 2019, do you know what the warranty is for a 2019 with under 20,000 miles like mine? ?

Yes just learned that- dropping it off today as they have a loaner for me! The shuddering in reverse and lower speeds was quite odd and when I saw your post I knew it was the case on mine!

Mine seemed to struggle to go into reverse after a 350 mile trip recently. I'm going to mention this to my service advisor and see if they can look into it. Thanks so much for this post!! Great info.

They replaced the fluid 2 days ago and so far so good, 11 months left on my warranty than I’ll buy a 2-3 year extended warranty, than sell it for something even better.

The transfer case issue dates back to the E70 X5.
Same procedure where they would change the differential fluid first. If the shudder issue returned they would then replace the transfer case.

No Issues

No problems, done under warranty, no questions asked. And this was first time at this dealer since I had moved.

SIB

The original SIB is 20 02 20. But I believe that only covers the first step of changing the fluid. Don't have the one that covers xfer case replacement. BTW, parts alone are over $1K so is the $750 for replacement?

$750 seems fair for a fluid change (1st Step), I just had mine done two months ago. Issue came back though after 200 miles. Had the used car vehicle dealer, I bought my car from, pay for the replacement transfercase. $6865.........

This new referenced SIB - 27 02 20 is basically the same as the original
20 02 20 which calls for the replacement of the fluid. This was performed on my 2019 G05 in 2020. As I had previously posted the symptom re-appeared about a year later and the entire transfer case was replaced under warranty. I just dont have the SIB the dealer referenced for the replacement, whice was to
be implemented if the fluid change was unsuccessful. In my case the fluid change worked for about a year, and there has been no recurrence with the new transfer case after about a year and a half.
BTW, since I had moved there were two different dealers involved, (NJ & GA) and both handled the issue effortlesly. (the week with a brand new 750 loaner was cool too

Transfer case problems?

Interesting to read these threads? I thought the shudder y transfer case was peculiar to the 2012 model only ? My X5 35d began to play up a matter of days after I had towed our Caravan. It had been ok untill then. It has done 81k - kilometers. I changed the fluid using the correct BMW oil ($86 ) a liter. The old oil was very black. I nearly brought another liter and flushed it out first , but a another mechanic advised me against that and said not to as if the clutch plates are to clean they can slip ??? Anyway after doing the job as I backed it of the hoist I think it did a very small judder but has been perfect since. No warranty on my car of course! Also it is not an easy job to drain and refill the oil owing to them being hid behind a huge cross member. To remove this is a big job. I got a 14mm headed bolt and nut which fits into both plugs , tightened the nut hard up against the bolt and then Mig welded the two together, perfect just fits in with room to get a 14mm ring spanner on. They are dam tight ? It took about 600 mils of oil.Pity i cant put a pic of the homemade BMW No1 tool ???
