windows and moonroof opened on their own while car was parked!

yes this happened today. my car was parked in parking lot at work. the windows and moonroof had opened on their own. there was heavy downpour in the afternoon and then drizzle. my colleague saw my car and called me. when i got to my car, windows and moon roof open. some water drops on seat and door were found.
I am really concerned if this happened automatically or someone tried to break into the car? do I need to take it to dealership for check?

Any chance something pressed and held the door unlock button on your key? If you hold down the door unlock button all windows roll down and the sunroof opens. It's the most likely scenario, though I wouldn't rule out a software issue that caused it to open.

I've had this happen to me as well on my F. Siren went off at night while I was asleep. Heart was pounding and I ran outside...windows were down and moonroof was wide open. My keys were on the dinning room table. The only reason I can think of was that the remote went squirrelly and set everything off.

I found on many of my new cars that the remote battery that was installed from the factory was less than fresh. I tend to pop open my new remote and install a fresh battery from the start. It’s only $1.50 to know I have a fresh battery remote. The new X5 is one of the most technologically advanced vehicles so it might be sensitive to a weak key fob signal and do funky things?? FYI, I tested my fob remote range and it is well past 100 yards.

Excellent idea.

I’ve found that when the remote batteries on my TiVos get old, the remote continues to work but won’t operate the sound. The remote doesn’t die, it just gets very wonky. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if the BMW remotes have similar issues.

Most likely you sat on your key or had it in a tight pocket. I’ve done it many times and it is a stupid key design. The key cover accessory solves it, but them the keyfob is even bigger.

I had my keys in my pocket but I don't know if I pressed the unlock by mistake. I was traveling this weekend and it hasnt happened again. I hope there's no software issue.

I started a separate thread on this, but after three days of ownership, my key fob didn’t unlock or lock the car as I approached/walked away.

I immediately replaced the battery and it is all good now. Try that first. The battery is available in any supermarket or drug store.

It’s a CR2032 I believe. Mine is a Panasonic brand but obviously any brand will do.

Yup.
Update: today the key is wonky again. Sometimes doesn’t unlock when I approach, although touching the door handle unlocks the car. Always seems to lock when I walk away.

Not gonna panic. Can’t get connected drive to work at all either, while it was semi-functioning in the past. *sigh*

I was at the dealer for service with my X7 and while we were standing there, key on the service advisers desk, my drivers window started to roll down. He said "well that is interesting" and took a note. They say they re-coded the windows, but it was amazing it happened while standing at the service counter. But it has been the minor issue I have been having. This X7 has been frustrating to say the least...

You'd better buy a lottery ticket.

Do you realize how fortunate you were to have that happen? I've had intermittent issues that were obscure and very difficult to reproduce. Your car did it for you at just the right time!

Ha!! I should have! It was there for a multitude of other issues that are still present unfortunately. It losing all power and throwing drive-train malfunctions while driving was really more on my mind at the service visit. That was just icing on the "you have to be kidding me" cake.

Has this happened since? I had an issue where the just the rear driver side window opened an inch while parked at home yesterday, and after a trip to see Christmas lights at our zoo tonight, I noticed just the rear passenger window was completely rolled down upon our return. I was initially alerted when I saw a window open message in the app while remote starting the vehicle as we were walking out.

Of course I can't see anything in the 500 page. 8 font manual about replacing key fob batteries. Anything to be aware of/have to reset in the car once the batter is replaced, or is it a simple pop out and replace? Assume it's a standard 1012?

Thanks.

Just be very careful opening the remote to replace it. The remote is fragile and expensive if damaged. If you feel less than confident take it to a dealer

Pop out and replace, my dealer replaced the batteries on both fobs gratis at my 10K service earlier this month.

I am surprised this shit can't be disabled in IDrive yet. After having the tailgate on my X6 open in the garage and get slightly damaged, I make it a habit to NEVER carry the car key in my pants pocket if I don't have to.

Interesting that in my x5 hybrid by default windows and sunroof cannot be opened or closed from the keyfob, this feature needs to be coded.

per the manual: Convenient Opening and Convenient Closing. works without issue on my MY21 45e via key fob.

some caveats: opening via the fob works from afar, but closing does not due to safety reasons. the requirement is that you're close enough to visualize all windows to ensure nothing gets trapped while closing them.
