Rear Hatch/Door noisy

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Just purchased a new to us 2021 X5M Comp... love it so far, but holy shiiiiiiiiit the rear hatch rattles and squeaks. I initially thought it could be weather related, based on hot to cold and cold to hot. It's early spring in Texas, so our temperature swings are pretty drastic for a couple of months. Anyway, I've tried to see if there are any adjustments between the two doors. back there, but don't see anything obvious. Anyone else experience this, or have any ideas on how the resolve this irritating noise?

Squeak squeak squeak - my front passenger door or B pillar made this rattle or squeak noise since two weeks of arrival on my 2021 x6mc. I tried to figure it out and find out where the noise was coming from but honestly, I gave up after multiple attempts. I asked BMW to troubleshoot 4 weeks into my ownership/lease-ship and they said they could not troubleshoot it because my suspension was modified and that may have been the cause. (Which is BS)

Anyway, i just lived with it for 3 years and thankfully am not experiencing the same thing with my 24 x6mc now (also lowered).

I finally found a couple of things to try... I'll update this thread once I actually try one, or both of the supposed "fixes".

Its common on all X5s. you can adjust the two round bump stops on the back and also apply some electrical tape around the two guides on the trunk to make it more snug. I've done this to all 3 X vehicles I've owned with success.

I saw that on a old post from a couple years ago here... I appreciate your input, and reply. For sure going to try it to see if it helps. It's maddening listening to it squeak and rattle.

going through this myself now. was infuriating -- i took it to the dealer to have them do it (along with a few other things), and predictably they did nothing and told me it was all fixed. i ended up pulling the trim panel off the tailgate above the window because it felt super loose and finding a broken clip and guide in there. replaced that, snapped it back in and it's definitely tighter now.

re: the guides, you can adjust the side to side ones by loosening a bolt in there and moving it around. TIS specifies for both those and the bump stops that you should be able to place a folded piece of "yellow tape" (i used painters tape), close the trunk lid and be able to pull the tape out with some effort. if it's fully stuck, or no effort then adjust accordingly.

i need to do some more testing on mine, but i still have a sound like something rolling around in the trunk area... like a marble or something. car is completely empty, i tried pulling the security cover, anything and still hear it. i think i'll have to ride in the trunk to chase that one down.

I had a similar experience... however I isolated it down to the retractable cargo cover. Took it off, stowed it in its place under the rear floor and much happier. Not sure if it's that easy for you, but worth checking to be 100% it's not the hatch itself.

I appreciate all your opinions, and replies... My wife and I bought a BRAND new 2020 X3 M Comp back in 2020, and I don't remember it having an issue with squeaks, or rattles. Something about those pre-covid cars it seems.

I still think this split tailgate idea sucks in reality. It's a "great" idea in theory, but too many moving parts. Too many points of contact, which creates more chances for issues. Ahhhhh technology.

Some people also reported rattling coming from the button that releases the cargo cover so they stuck some felt tape around it. I also stuck some foam around some of the items around the factory jack under the floor.

i had a bad creaking sound whenever the rear would flex. (driveway slope, speed bump, etc..). got it “fixed” with some tape around the guide pieces on the hatch door.

just replace electrical tape with felt tape tonight. hopefully that lasts a bit longer.

i’ll look into adjusting the pieces at some point. mine are so tight that the plastic guides are marred.

I believe it was an option but can't remember for sure. Mine has a spare, jack and tools needed to change a tire. Highly recommend it for a car with such low profile tires. I also carry a tire plug kit with me just in case.

When ordering an F95/96, a customer can choose to get the spare tire. It doesn't cost anything, so why not get it. But most cars ordered for dealer inventory do not get the spare tire because many new car order managers don't even know a spare is a no cost item. Heck, most of them think the M vehicles come with run flat tires.

This is the first preowned daily driver my wife and I have purchased in a looooooong time. I can confirm, the dealers don't much at all about their cars they sell, or any optional equipment. I am a car guy, and 99% of the time I educate the sales people on what they are selling.
