Lightbulb Need your thoughts, sDrive owners!

Hey everyone, new member here. I'm in the process of pulling the trigger on a 2020 X5 sDrive40i and I opted to give up the xDrive to get some other packages I felt were going to be more useful for my growing family and keep the price affordable.

However, I'm having some serious second thoughts about losing out on xDrive, especially coming from an Audi and having Quattro. Granted, 99.99% of my driving would be on typical city roads and my part of VA rarely gets snow so I feel like sDrive should be fine the vast majority of the time.

But I don't see a lot from sDrive owners on here talking about their decision, so I'd love to hear how much you're enjoying your sDrive (or regretting your decision) to help me feel better (or worse).

I must say, coming from a 530d without X-drive, I think the drive to the front wheels is quite noticeable coming out of bends.

So there would be a plus for s-drive...
(but I never test drove an X5 with s-drive)

Good point, makes sense from a handling perspective. I do know they rate the sDrive a little faster (probably due to weight difference) so I'd have that going for me.

I think you will have a harder time reselling if only 2 wheel. If it matters. Unlike the above mention 5 series, being a top heavy SUV I don't think you'll be cornering hard enough to notice 2 vs 4 handling. just my $0.02....

I was in the exact same boat as you. Though I'm in Los Angeles, so I really have no need for xDrive, which is why I ordered the sDrive. We had a 2018 X5 sDrive35i and loved the way it drove. We've also had a few loaner G05 X5 sDrive40i's, and they also drove great. I like that it has faster acceleration too.

But realistically, the price difference isn't going to be much if you're leasing. The residual on the xDrive is 2% higher than the sDrive, so even though the lease credit is $1,000 less, you really only end up paying $500 more total for the xDrive (i.e., $15/month). So if you really want it, you should probably go for it.

I'm going to be financing and hopefully keeping it for 5 years or so, so resale value will be somewhat of an issue down the road potentially. But being down in the south, hopefully not too big of a hit to the wallet.

I talked to the dealer today and since they're pulling in what I wanted color/package-wise with my deposit, it looks like I'm committed to the sDrive. I'll make sure to keep good all-season tires on it just to be safe.

Appreciate the input, everyone!

The added monthly cost for xdrive won't even be noticeable. Get the car you want.

I suspect resale of sDrive v X is significantly impaired. IMO.

In terms of driveability, either way you will be impressed. I personally have an X Drive but had an S Drive loaner for about a week and did notice a subtle difference. The car still feels very solid and handles well, you just get a more pronounced push from the rear wheels, so acceleration feels different but overall very quick.

I must say I thought I was not going to like it but was throughly impressed. If you have no need to go offload you will be fine. If there is any question just do a test drive.
