Hood Adjustment

Anyone know if there is an (easy) way to adjust the hood position? My spouse's Bimmer hood is about 1/4" (yes, OCD) off center when closed. Not readily apparent, but when you notice can't be unseen. Or dealer?

I've seen to many mistakes doing this in the past.... Go to the dealer they shouldn't charge much at all and probably can find WHY its not aligned. Just my thoughts..

Good advice - don't see anything like an adjustment screw under the hood.... Looked at several others and haven't seen it repeated.

A 1/4" is actually quite a bit given the normal seam is fairly small. I wonder how it even closes without hitting something. Why fool around with it, it is brand new so let the dealer handle it.

When you say the hood is off-center by about 1/4" do you mean the difference in the gaps on either side is 1/4"? The overall gap on my hood is uniform and about 1/8".

That is something better fixed by the dealer.

BTW don't look at the folded mirrors... driver folds different amount than the passenger side.

Hard to tell with all the shiny, but probably more obvious is the front gap, right and left:

Hard to get a perfect 90 degree shot, but this may be a little closer:

IF the hood is off center due to the hinges, they are a loooong way away from the snout so even a tiny, tiny adjustment at the hinges will have a huge impact at the snout. I'd just have the dealer do it, they screw it up, they pay for it.

Could it also be that the receiving latch is pulling it to one side? Meaning that maybe the hood is centered until it latches. Close it to just before the point of latching and see if you can tell. If it looks good, slowly bring it down to the latch and latch it and see what happens.

Either way, with the small gaps of todays hoods, any misalignment could be crunching the hood against the fenders and sending paint chips flying.

It actually looks like it partially straightened itself after several closings (I notice you need to slam these pretty vigorously), but still off as pictured. It was a LOT more canted when we picked it up. Back to the dealer for ceramic and PPF, so will address....

On a separate note, my passenger side tailpipe looked like they dropped it off the pallet, so one side is partially flattened on the end instead of oval. Currently in for the same exterior treatment, so will ask about that. I'm assuming fairly simple straightening on a mandrel, or just replacement of the end (looked like it was a short run). If that's all I find, I'll call it good. Q7s required a deal more freshening up when received.

Other owners have also stated that their two tailpipes are different, one is round the other is more egg shaped. I don't recall who started that thread, but its here somewhere and they posted a few pix.

Spouse's are both uniformly oval, and the damaged side on mine has clearly been scraped as well as flattened. Don't have pics yet, but will post. Looks like an easy fix, but it is BMW....

Here's the thread I was referring to, is yours like this or damaged with marks? A little hard to see but if you magnify the pic you can see it.

I also do not believe that BMW would have designed it that way.

Should I accept this for what it is or should I take it up with dealer?

The funny part is that the pipes are different shapes too, with the left one being pretty round and the right one slighty oblong. Could this be something do to with the way they get a diesel to sound so good? I know that it has some sort of device on the pipe near the backbox to make it sound better, but different shape pipes?? i'm confused..

Damaged with marks, and distinctly flattened on the right side of the pipe, clear damage, not uniform. These are pics of spouse's and loaner, right and left - should have mentioned they are 2020s. I'm just guessing that this is the way 40i iL6 tailpipes should look; understanding there may be one-of, or early run differences (witness the absence of roof rails on some 50is). They should at least be symmetrical. Will post mine when I get it back.

Wow, that had to be that way before assembly, as least that is how it appears to me. If it were my car, I'd fix it myself.

If I had a mandrel or a form big enough, I'd probably try. Problematic though with the pipe still attached, and I'm leery of whacking on the tailpipe (it's actually pretty substantial metal) and then having the dealer tell me not their responsibility....

My goodness, that's more than an aesthetic fault! Whatever bent it must have whacked or sat on it pretty hard; that is heavy-duty metal, not tin foil. Have you checked underneath to see if the rest of the pipe is damaged?

What did the dealer mean by "not their responsibility". Aren't they going to repair it?

On the other hand, if the dealer repairs it, they might just flatten the one on the driver's side

Paladin1,
Go to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto, they let you borrow tools and get their expanding mandrel kit made for exhaust pipes and get your tailpipe back to normal.

Looks like the one in this video.. ..

Thanks Marty! Going to try the dealer route first - they haven't said they wouldn't repair it (haven't said they would), but clearly damaged from the factory. More concerning is that someone - on the line - installed this pipe the way it was. It obviously wasn't damaged in transport. So the thought comes to mind, what else did they do that isn't visible? Hence some of the woes discussed on the forums here....

He was saying he wouldn't want the dealer to say that if he attempted to fix the pipe and then bent it further.
