Instrument Panel Blacked Out

I tried searching for this issue and couldn’t find anything.

My instrument panel went black and warning signal going off constantly The only thing that shows up are the auto headlight and high beam indicator and traction control. I turned car off and then on again and didn’t help. Luckily I was only a few miles from my mother’s house, but certainly disconcerting to drive with no speedometer, etc. I’m 2.5 hours from home and am not relishing driving home with this issue.

Has anyone else had this happen? Is there a fix until I can get it in to the dealer? It’s Sunday so can’t call them!

Tried a reset (push in volume control button for 30s)?

Don't recall hearing of something this severe before, but always worthwhile to try iDrive reset: car on, volume button press and hold 20-30s until mid screen goes black (if it's not black now), then let go. Perhaps repeat twice.

Is your HUD on? Is your middle screen on? When you say car off/on, do you mean engine or full lock unlock?

Tried the 30s reset and car on/off still no instrument panel display. HUD not working either.

I can at least see speed in my Waze app via CarPlay, but...

Try turning the car off and waiting 15 minutes for the system to completely shut down then restart.

The warning signals without knowing what they are for is probably the most disconcerting part!

It also kept switching between day mode and night mode in middle screen.

Obviously a pretty serious software/computer issue.

Didn’t work.

I’ve had the driver assistance malfunction and cameras replaced a few months ago. Last week, I started getting another driver assistance error that would go away quickly. I was going to have it looked at when I take it in for an oil change. I’m wondering if the two issues are connected.

Yes. Definitely going straight to dealership in morning! Hope I don’t have any (other) major issues on the 2.5 hour drive home today. Closest dealership is 1.5 hours, so if it goes even more wonky, I will stop there.

Make sure you record it so you can show the dealership if it miraculously fixes itself.

Agreed completely - take photos and videos to prove to the BMW garage. It will help them see the issue if it is an intermittent fault.

This just happened to me this morning too. The outage only briefly affected the instrument panel, it went black and I simultaneously got an error message indicating "reduced driver assistance" in the center iDrive stack. I clicked to "close" on the error and the driver instrument cluster flashed back on. It is definitely a weird issue! I did not notice if the headlight or traction indicators stayed on or not.

I was driving down the highway and using the assisted driving/cruise functions, both those features shut off when the error occurred but I was able to resume normal operation after the instrument panel flashed back on. The outage only lasted about 10-15 seconds.

Keep us posted as to what the service dept finds. I'm running a 2019/07 version of iDrive and mine is a November 18 build, with full camera systems for assisted driving and parking features for what it's worth.

Long long shot - did you try moving the instrument light dimming wheel to and fro - end to end? I had an intermittent black out issue on a previous BMW where the dimming wheel was at fault.

Given the errors and faults this is not likely the issue but thought I would offer it if it helps get you home safely.

Yes, deadlion, I did try that. No effect.

I did take a video of it. Good idea!

Instrument panel came back on about an hour into my drive. The first thing that flashed was the reduced driver assistance error, so it is definitely tied to that. It then went to set date/time. It seems to have just completely rebooted.

While the screen was out, the traction control symbol kept flashing on and off that it was off. The driver assistance button underneath the middle screen would go red every once in a while as well.

I did find a thread that someone posted about having the whole computer system replaced. Someone in that thread said that their instrument panel went out while driving, but came back on. I guess it is a thing.

I will be calling the service department first thing in the morning. This car has been there a LOT! Sigh.

Editing to add that mine is a November 18 build. I picked it up December 14, 2018. I don't even have 10K miles on it yet!

OK, this happened to me once, and ONLY ONCE.

I was driving at around 70kph, and the Instrument cluster blacked out, and a "limited driver assist warning" came up on the centre screen. The cluster came back after around 15-20 seconds; after what looked like a reboot of that ECU, but during that time I was driving blind, it was bloody scary. I dont remember if the HUD blanked out too, I was too focused on the Instrument cluster (WTF moment !!!!!) and praying it would come back soon...which it fortunately did.

That happened to me only once, when the car was on S/W 07/2019.47. My vehicle build is a January 2019.

I have since been upgraded to 11/2019.34, and nothing like that has happened (..yet), and it seems this new software release is stable, but I've only been on it for 1 week (7 days).

What you have is a critical fault and a critical safety issue. I wouldn't drive it, don't do it its not worth it.

Does your HUD still work?

Call the dealer, as him to get it towed back to the dealership.

Everything is working now.

It is very uncomfortable to drive with no display! And the HUD was not working, but did have middle screen with Carplay and Waze (which was the only way to see my speed)

Going to the dealer in the morning. (It's Sunday here) It's only a few kilometers/miles away, so I don't think I'll need to have it towed.

It's at the dealership. I will update this thread when/if they figure out the issue.

Actually had that happen with a previous X5 (F15) once when I started it. Tried restarting a few times - same problem. Called BMW and set up an appointment, went back to start about an hour later and everything was fine. Elected not to take it in (on the assumption they wouldn't find anything) and never happened again.

Did you ever find out what caused it?

I just had same experience

The black screen happened to me about a week ago while I was at the dealership meeting with a genius. They couldn't get it to reset after trying several different things. They eventually said they needed to update the software to 11/2023.30 to fix it. So far everything has been Ok.
