Air Suspension - Creaking

The air suspension creaks on my 2018, and the 2019 loaner I have. Dealer tells me it’s normal.

Sorry, I fail to believe that on an £80k car, it’s acceptable to have a freaky suspension when adjusting.

Anybody else?

If it makes a creaking noise when you are adjusting and then no more noise when finished, its normal. Most air systems have some noise to them when adjusting from the springs and not the actual air system. I have a Jeep that did this. I believe the fix was grease on the spring contact points.

Normal, on a luxury car? That’s insane.

Mine creaks only when lowering if i remember correctly but silent when raising. I think the noise is just the springs adjusting . Get the dealer to check it out if you feel it of concern.
Sorry i see you have already mentioned it to dealer. Just to add i cant hear anything in the car. Just when using the tailgate lowering with no engine running.

Feedback on this, dealer feels it’s acceptable and a characteristic of the car.

I find that unbelievable, that on any car, regardless of cost, that this creaking is acceptable. How can BMW design it in a manner that it makes a noise, and say “yes, that’s ok”?

I mean there’s a bunch of environmental factors that could be causing the creaking. Here, with the weather flip flopping between hot and cold during the night and day, I can only conclude expansion and contracting of parts. Maybe I am wrong, but I don’t foresee BMW controlling the environmental factors. The way I look at it, if it works and doesn’t throw faults, it’s all good.

I am pretty nit picky with the dealership, and know they triple check every time I take my vehicle in. At the end of the day, when the shop foreman blesses it off...it’s good. This is the same guy who fixed a spring issue with an M car that seemed to baffle the masses for about 8 months. Imagine tin cans on a string dragging behind the car at low speeds. Needless to say, I was happy he fixed it.

Ask they for a road test with the shop foreman. You can go around the lot a few times and try the level change to replicate. Short of selling the car, that’s all I can recommend.

It’s not just BMW. They all do it with this type of air suspension. Non air suspension are quiet as a casket but they don’t move up and down as far. In my experience, temp is a factor in the noise.

The air suspension on my 7 series does not make any noises when going up or down.

tastes jigga I can't explain why one would and the other wouldn't. I know you definitely get cold weather in Illinois, so you understand the possible temperature explanation. I can only guess that the X5 has a wider direction of travel in regards to the suspension. One of the gurus can explain, but I think it was something like 4" that the X5 can move vertically.

no noise/creaking on ours here in AZ (60-70 degree temp) and we use it a few times a day... as mentioned, most likely the cold weather.

G12 7 Series air suspension is design for self leveling by being able to send air to individual springs to balance out unevenly loaded vehicle.

The air suspension also has manual control, to raise or lower the height of the body by up to 20 millimeters. If raised, at speeds over 35 mph, the self-leveling function will return the body height back to normal, and in SPORT mode, the air suspension will automatically lower 10 millimeters.

You're rarely going to hear the 7 air suspension adjust since you're driving.

With X5 and X7 - there's more air suspension travel than the 7 Series. If you're at load level going to normal - I can hear the air compressor - or at normal level dropping to load - there's minimal noise as it's releasing air. But I don't hear any creaks, my air suspension is quite sporty in comfort and extremely quiet.
