Which seats 456 or 4MA?

Hi folks,
unfortunately I have no option to try 4MA and would like to hear from people who tried both, which one is better 456 or 4MA?

In local configurator, 456 are called Comfort seats and 4MA M Multifunktion seats?

What most concerns me is which one are more soft for longer sitting because of my lower back and spine problems? I need more soft seats.

456 is not bad, better then most BMW seats, but I would like to opt for 4MA (more expensive then 456) since this is the most important decision for me.

I initially wanted an X4, but found seats too hard. Now I put down a deposit for X6 and need to decide which of these two are better for me.

So not more supportive, not more sporty, not better looking, just more soft and comfortable (like my sofa .

I attach pictures of both, first 456, then (bigger picture) 4MA.
Thanks!

Since you can't see the controls on the seats in your 2nd pic...not sure what all it can do.

But if you have a bad back...I would highly suggest whatever seats you get...make sure that they have the 4-way lumbar feature (usually the round switch button). The lumbar feature has an air pad in the seat back that can move up/down and inward/outward to specifically fit the curvature of your spine/back.

And most BMW owners find the seat optioned with 22-ways are usually the most comfortable. Those seats will have an upper back that can articulate as well...which also helps "individualize" the seat to fit not only the lumbar region but also support the upper back behind your shoulder bone area.

If you're tall or have long legs...then the extending thigh support can also be helpful in making the seat more comfortable.

The sport or M seats usually have extra or extended side bolstering on the upper and lower sections of the seat. They look good and provide extra lateral support if you are an aggressive driver...but they may also require a little bit extra effort to get around them and into the seat. So if you have limited movement...and have to get in and around them to center yourself in the seat...you may not want them...and they may also not have the upper articulating back (please correct this if someone knows for sure).

There have also been lots of comments that the non-ventilated seats tend to be more comfortable to some because they have extra padding that is slightly reduced with the ventilated seats with its perforated leather and fans embedded in the seat bottom & back.

BMW has changed the button layout...but the 22-way seats will look something like the pics below (1st pic = G chassis & 2nd pic = F chassis) and offer the movement listed below:
  • 2-way thigh support
  • 8-way bottom seat cushion movement
  • 4-way upper seat back movement
  • 2-way side bolstering movement
  • 2-way headrest movement
  • 4-way lumbar support

Jole,

You need to go for comfort seats with lumbar support, Code 456 from our BMW dealer...

You are saying 456 is more comfortable than 4MA?
Have you had a chance to try 4MA and compare?

The only thing we can tell you without knowing your dimensions and mobility is that the sport (or M) seat is not the most comfortable seat for many because they are designed to hold your body tight during maneuvers. The extended side and thigh bolstering is also something you have to move around.

Take note in the 2nd pic you posted as to how the side bolstering extends in comparison to the door jamb. So if you have the seat set for you (if you're an average size person)...and you have a bad back...then you may need to maneuver around those side bolsters before you even consider getting out of the door. If you don't have a slender/athletic body...then this will also make the M seats more difficult to live with.

The 1st pic you have pictured above are not the top of the line 20/22-way comfort seats...you can tell by the button switch on the side of the seat as well as not having the upper articulating back feature. They look like basic electric seats with (perhaps) lumbar support. So if you're looking at those seats as the upgraded comfort seats...then they are not them.

Again, without knowing your personal body style and mobility issues...we can't really say that the M sport seats will be comfortable for you with the back issues you've mentioned. The sport seats lend themselves more to slender/athletic body builds that have high mobility due to their extended thigh and side bolstering. The more that you are NOT like that description...you'll probably find the 22-way comfort seats the most comfortable.

Here's a video that shows the 22-way functions of the upgraded comfort seats...also note that the side bolsters (for an average size person) is amount where the door jamb is...which will make ingress and egress easier...especially if you have a "bad back":

I don't know which is the code for these most comfortable seats. If they are not standard, 456 or 4MA, which one are they? I don't see them in pricelist my dealer sent me. Are they available outside of US?

4MA is not currently available in the US - only 456. I'm not aware of anyone internationally that has ordered or had a vehicle with 4MA delivered, which is why you're not going to have any comments on which one is more comfortable.

4MA looks to be a comparable seat in the M5 Competition which I have on loan for this month. Enclosed is the photo of the M multifunction seat (full Aragon brown interior).

As with Wild Blue's review of the M5 Competition seats, I also find the very comfortable despite the large amounts of bolstering. I don't have a bad back but it does require me to a bit of effort to get out LOL.

Here's the BMW Press Club thread for December updates:

Thanks all. It looks like they are standard in X5/6M, so I will jump over there to ask. More chance to find someone from M to have also experienced Comfort seats before and can compare to 4MA.
