M50i without DHP vs xDrive50i with DHP

Hi all, I'm in the process of buying a used 2020 M50i. It has nearly every option I would choose if I were ordering new, however it is missing DHP. There seems to be a consensus that it changes the feel of the X5 dramatically, making it a much better handling vehicle. I also found a used loaded 2019 xDrive50i with DHP for the same price I'm paying for the M50i. This is my single "do-everything" vehicle. Which one would you choose? Are people overselling the impacts of DHP? Is the car awash with body roll without it? I'm not going to be tracking the car, but I would like to get a good balance of performance and handling.

We just picked up 2021 M50 with DHP on Friday and there's definitely a difference in handling oppose to one without. You really feel the difference in the curves and maneuvering in tight spots.

For your situation, I would still get the M50 without DHP over the 2019 50i with DHP because the M50 with extra HP is much better driving vehicle than the 50i plus you get the advantage of M adaptive suspension with the M50.

You cant go wrong with the M50 and in the long run you will be much happier. DHP is not worth sacrificing the extra hp for it. Just my 2 cent.

At the end of the day, the X5 with the standard suspension is a great handling SUV. But, it's still a big, heavy, luxury SUV. It's not ever going to be a 4C or an Exige. Yes, the DHP will help it handle a bit better, but don't expect miracles.

With that said, the M50i comes with several advantages including M adaptive suspension, a limited slip differential, more horsepower, and if nothing else.... resale value due to the higher prestige associated with an MPerformance version of the model, badging, door sills, brakes, and various trim pieces.

I would definitely opt for the M50i.

I have a 2020 M50i without DHP. This weekend drove it through some windy mountain roads... Never thought it didn't handle well. Would DHP have improved it... Absolutely, but that's not to say it still wasn't solid w/o it.

Doesn’t the M-Sport package on the standard 50i add the adaptive suspension and diff?

ZMP M Sport Package for MY19 G05, adds 2VF Adaptive M Suspension. 2T4 M Rear Differential is part of the ZDH Dynamic Handling Package for MY19.

It's standard on M50i. I recommend sticking with M50i.

Congrats! Good choice. So it has the standard suspension not air? I've an M50i with DHP. Didn't drive it or any M50i prior to ordering. Ultimately it's a big (fast) heavy tank, regardless the suspension you'll love it though. Enjoy!

Correct, standard M suspension, no air. Thank you!

Thank you! To be honest I wish it was stock, but it's not too bad. Maybe I'll find another mineral white M50i to trade with.
