Best radar detector for NY / NJ?
And do they still even make a difference with instant on, etc? I've had an Escort built into my cayenne since 2012 and it rarely pics anything up. I really just rely on Waze police detection.

I didn't think any of the radar detectors worked anymore, also even if they worked, wouldn't they go off all the time with so many 25mph speed cameras in local roads, wouldn't be hassle to keep turning it on and off, or are they smart ones that can disable warning when you go under certain speed?

I think lots of places are using laser tech for enforcement. LIne of sight, not that much bounce, harder to detect and reads quicker than most radar based systems. Easier to pick out one vehicle, too.

I've been thinking of the Uniden R7 given I have the M50 on order and expect those 523 horses to get out of my control. With laser more prevalent these days, you need to go a little more expensive and get some laser "jamming". Still, if you have something since 2012, an upgrade is probably in order.

Top 3 from rdforum.org are Escort Redline 360c (cha ching), Uniden R7, and Valentine V1 Gen 2. A lot of people are holding out for the Radenso Theia, but they'll be even more expensive is the consensus.
None of them are what could be considered cheap, but once you've driven with them a bit then you can tune them to quieten them down. Check out vortexradar.com for some good baseline settings. If you're using an Android SmartPhone then there's a really cool app called JBV1 for the Valentine which opens up a whole host of detail, too much detail sometimes. |

Oh, the Theia is going to be really pricey, that's for sure. When it finally comes out of course.

What do they use in NY/NJ?
In CA, lasers have gotten really prevalent so you really need an integrated laser jammer system. That's illegal and REALLY expensive so most enthusiasts I know just go with Waze. lol Even with higher end cars cuz the benefits aren't worth the downsides of installing all that equipment (not related to costs). |

Stealth laser jammer and detector combo is the only way to go. Most of the area you're in is Laser/Lidar. Only small town PD is still using radar. Anything other that is just cluttering the interior, giving false reads or just letting you know you're caught.

I tested the product below against speed readers and the results come up as "--" or a flashing "00" with very early warnings well above the original V1 and some other products. Only other product I had in the past that worked as well was the LPP.

Anyone know how to hard wire the radar detector? I usually do this on my cars directly into the fuse box and then tuck the wire into the headliner.

It is easy to wire a RD to the X5. The fuse block is located in the passenger footwell and plenty of spare connections to connect and fuse, and easily accessed.

I still use a Escort SOLO. It still is effective when not over relying on it. Worked especially well on the Atlantic City Expressway with alerts of those median speed traps or troopers hiding on the bushes.

NYC- NYPD Highway patrol still uses lots of Ka Band. they just park at the side of the road and leave it going full blast.
they also love to use their driverside mirror to bounce the lidar gun beam off of, instead of parking perpendicular to traffic. i think this causes alot of scatter as i can pick up a beam aimed at another car... hardwired V1 Gen2 plus the JBV1 app with quiet ride turned on, plus waze. the v1 picks up what waze misses, the app keeps the ride quiet, just alot of visual indicators.

Does anyone know which model Blendmount fits properly? On the Blendmount web site, and narrowing down the search for X5 with the Uniden R7, it provides three options. I plan on doing a tap too to avoid running a wire all the way down to the fuse box.
It would be great if BMW included a USB port hidden up there. They could say it's for plugging in dash cameras. |

Here is the Blend Mount I used for a Radenso Pro M, but it fit very nicely with the mirror mount and is very sturdy. I chose to run the power cable to the fuse box in the right footwell.

Right now I would go with V1 Gen 2 at $500. Performance is great, and k band falses (from BSM systems) is outstanding. Redline 360c is an equal performer and adds GPS lockouts but before spending $749 on the 360C, I would wait for Radenso Theia which looks to be a leap above both in performance.

I am much more impressed with the V1G2 over the other two in terms of protection (i.e. distance, off-axis, front and rear, ramp-up) while minimizing false (BSM) alerts. Those who like apps like Waze would also like Escort Live that adds yet another layer or protection and the EL database warns red-light and speed cameras. I use the iPhone app V1Driver for my V1G2 and love the fact that the alerts most meaningful to me go to my Apple Watch. EL alerts can also go to the AW. BMs can be co-opted because I am using an old BM used with the original Escort Redline that I now use with the V1G2. There are times I run all three detectors at the same time as the G05 gives real estate that comes in handy. In the meantime, I agree that following Vortex online, FB, twitter, etc., is a good way to get video and text summaries of the discussions at RDF.

It's correct that most places use lidar, which is an undetectable laser. The only way to stop it, is with the $4000 jammers installed combo. Any windshield mounted unit will just let you know you're caught. However the flip side is the police have to be outside to use lidar. Usually on a motorcycle, but also in a parked car with windows down on side of road. Which means you won't see Laser on a rainy day or bad weather. Also, they are more likely to show up on Waze because they have to be in a fixed position. In terms of radar, there are a lot of false positives and instant on; but something is better than nothing. And with today's unmarked units; it's nice to know if they are running radar. |
