View is top down and you can easily line the ball up with the hitch. I’ve done this a few times. Works very well - nailed the position both times and lowered the trailer straight on without repositioning. . Last edited by lumpydog; 02-19-2019 at 11:51 AM.. Reason: Typo |

On top of getting the stealth hitch with an OEM wiring harness being in the 700-800$USD ballpark, the main point of getting a stealth hitch (and thus why they are more expensive than a normal one) is to NOT have the visible bumper cutout in the back of the vehicle. If yours comes with the OEM hitch, you would need to replace the cutout version of the bumper with a regular one to maintain the stealthiness. If you don't buy a new bumper, given that they are not designed with the visible bumper cutout in mind, it may look awkward. If you don't care about that, then ignore this comment. Plus, it may not be a given that it is easy to retrofit the kick to open sensor if you replace their hitch as this will possibly require more hardware, like the sensor itself, and likely programming to enable the feature. If they are willing to do this, it is going to be costly. If the kick to open is that important to you, you'd be better off canceling your order and ordering another one or try to negotiate for them to retrofit the sensor to the side of the OEM hitch and do the required programming. It is shown in multiple places. When you click on the tow option in the build tool it shows it in the details that kick to open will be removed.

Also just about every automaker does the same thing when adding a hitch. Not sure why its such a big deal, as it still opens with the push of a button. How quickly we get spoiled with auto everything!

I've just had the BMW OEM (WESTFALIA) removable hitch towbar system installed on my M-sport 30d, and its absolutely awesome. Its a clean installation; no cutouts on any horizontal / visible panels, and you cant even tell the car has a towbar when its not installed. The trailer connector swings upwards, so absolutely nothing visible.
Towing capacity is only around 6000lbs (2700Kgs); what I tow is no more than 1500-1600 Kgs (~3500Lbs) - so not an issue for me. I know the retrofit (after factory) removable tow hitch is more expensive; cost me about $3k (Aussie dollars), but I'm willing to pay a little more to not have the cutout in the rear diffuser, or have the thing visible when I'm not towing - which is like 99% of the time. I can post up some pics if anyone is interested.... |

did anyone figure out if its possible to relocate sensor to keep the swing-the-leg-to-open-trunk functionality with the stock hitch ?
I peaked under the trunk and could not even figure out where the sensor is...

Ultimately I rarely used the kick to open though and do tow occasionally so I opted for the hitch and sacrificed the kick to open on my 2020 M50i build. |

I got the tow package on my M50i... even though I'll probab li y never use it. Comes with extra oil cooler I believe, and you never know what the future holds.
I would never use the kick feature anyway. Last car had it. It was never reliable, and I never bothered anyway. My biggest disappointment is that the M performance carbon diffuser only works on cars without the hitch. That's why I'll likely have it vinyl wrapped in carbon. |

I installed the aftermarket Curt from etrailer.com. Took me about 2 hours and still retained the kick to open. I didn't look for the sensors when it was all apart. In all fairness it does hang down 2' and is visible but I don't care. I don't plan on any actual towing, just bike rack.

In some states, aftermarket trailer brakes are required." |

I suspect the hitch may interfere with the kick sensor.

While I would tend to agree, why then do aftermarket hitches of varying design not interfere as well?
It would be nice if we knew the exact location of the sensor. I don’t have my G05 yet so I can’t check, but maybe others could...hint, hint. On a side note, I don’t care because I doubt I would use it much, if at all, but I really don’t care for the body color bezel. Probably my first mod will be painting that bezel black as it should have been. Last edited by polychromatic; 12-26-2019 at 03:17 PM.. |
