Remote start - what can it really do?

I've had my 50i for a week and the remote start instructions from BMW are clear as mud. Reading this forum I realized remote start is actually climatize now in the connected app.

Can remote start be taught to turn on the heated seats or steering wheel? My friend with a F150 can do that, but I can't find it in the connect drive app.

Also it was odd that when I got in the car it wanted me to press start to start the engine.

It was -15 here this morning, so I'd love to figure the thing out.

Thanks

I don't believe you can turn on seats and steering wheel with remote start.

I don't have a g05.

However, in my g01/ g02 there is a setting where you can have the car automatically turn in the heated wheel / seats when the temperature is below a certain value that you can adjust.

I wonder if you can set this value and then have the remote store work on the x5. When the car turns on it notices that the temperature is below "x" value.

Just a thought. Someone try this please.

I have not seen an option to do this in any of the setting menus, unfortunately.

X4 is in the shop so I can't check today. I'll add this to my list of things to do

You'd figure with all the tech it would do it. My Jeep Grand Cherokee detects outside temperature and determines if it needs to turn on the heated seats and steering wheel or turn on the cooling seats.

I hope it at least climatized the car to the temperature that was last set.

This is a issue I learned to accept between a Domestic SUV and German SUV. There is a different interpretation on the vehicle. Options that were on mid grade domestic SUV's are now touted as major luxury options on the German cars. Full laminated glass, for instant has been a option on Ram pickups for years. Its a no-big-deal option but BMW doesnt use it as a standard feature at this price point. I can get full laminated glass on a $35k SUV. Remote start is so old of a option its usually standard on about everything from Dodge. Germans make a brilliant driving car but tend to complicate some of the simplest concepts in the automotive industry. Its been that way for decades.

You'd figure if the SUV was produced in the US they would adopt to some of these features we've come to enjoy in North America. At least we "final" got remote start which cost me $500 for essentially a software update. Maybe there will be another update to include some other features.

One would think our Domestic idea of a SUV would be very influential since the SUV was born in the USA and eventually became the most dominant/desired vehicle in the industry today.

Agree!

Let's hope some of these features can be added through software updates similar to how they activated remote start.

There is no reason our heated seats and steering wheel should not turn on with remote start. The omission almost seems too deliberate. Like a soup restaurant that wont give you spoons.

it is an available option on the new 3 series. You can set the temp under which the seats will turn on. It will work with remote start.

It will be available on X5 with software update.
Look at 3 series forum or search this one for this topic.

Also worth noting
- remote start only works for 15 min an turns off.
- you can schedule departure time and remote start later like a washer delayed start

I suspected there would be a software update.

I did see those changes in the latest Connect Drive App update.

Love remote start on my F150, with auto heat or cool depending on outside temperature.

I am not sure I even understand the point for remote start on g05 if it does not turn on heat or AC ?!?!

Your kinda right. My Power Wagon does the same. I have started it 300 yards walking down the mountain from hunting and it’s all warmed up. You can ventilate the X5 without even starting it up for summer time.

I guess the engine will be warm enough to generate heat quickly? It sounds like a pointless option at this point and can you imagine I paid $500 for this option. I trust we'll get a software update to address all these things.

This is a security feature otherwise someone could smash the window and drive off with your car!

Today, the remote start can 1.) start the car for 15 min. durations 2.) Climatize the car (heat/cool)

Jay has a good video on this:

It would be nice if you could set a specific temperature via the app and/or enable the heated seats, wheel, etc.

So does it heat or cool based on the last temperature set on the car before you turned off?

I believe it simply sets the climate to an average temperature not the last used temperature as available in some cars with remote start.

Perhaps someone can test this out for us?
