Replace Battery! on my M50i

Had my X5 M50i for approx 1 week. CD seems stable as does Apple Carplay. but yesterday after long weekend of PPF and Ceramic wheels plus window tint. Battery Replace indicator came on and would not go away. put on a tender overnight and that did not resolve. luckily I was near BMW dealer today, late afternoon. Great service and replaced rear battery...who knew. I only put battery tender on front battery. anyway it's resolved.

I had Assisted driving plus come on in heavy traffic so that was cool as well. car basically drove with very little nagging. totally diff than just assisted driving over 40mph.

A number of folks had that happen after tinting since the doors can be open long enough to drain the battery. Driving it around should charge it back to normal but since they replaced it you are good to go.

There are two batteries? One in the engine compartment and one somewhere in the rear? What kind of batteries are they? Both lead acid?

Yes 2 batteries. Assume both lead acid

I use a battery tender at the front charge points under the hood. This will charge both batteries. It’s the nature of these high tech cars and their parasitic loss.
Every new BMW should have a trickle charger on it if it’s not driven almost every day.

OP, A trickle charger overnight will not be long enough to charge up both batteries at their depleted state. Your dealer did replace the battery so that was a nice courtesy

Somehow from reading X5 posts, I though there was one main lead acid battery and one smaller battery located somewhere to handle the vampire electronics. Didn't catch on till now that there are two lead acids.
I had two in the trunk of my 840, they were in parallel and I would connect my trickle charger to the single point in the engine bay...those batteries lasted 14 years before I had to replace them. I'm a believer in trickle charging when not driving the car on a regular basis.

There are three different batteries used but only two at a time depending on engine and equipment.

Our 8 month old X5 get driven almost every day (town driving; not highway), but I still like to put the tender on it on weekends. I noticed that each time, it takes the tender about 36 hours to get the battery(s) topped off and change to float mode. Much longer than any of my other cars that get the same treatment.

I've either got a battery that is just weak or the load on the battery is high and the charging system never gets it back to completely full.

Personally, I believe vehicle charging systems are designed more to support the vehicle electrical load than to get the battery to a fully charged state.

I like to put tenders on all my battery operated vehicles/equipment, just to keep them fully topped off. Cars, ATV's, Motorcycles, Mowers, etc... My wife says I'm obsessed with it. Whatever!

I install charger pigtails on my vehicles, that are routed to grill, so that I can easily plug in a tender without opening hood

Actually, there are three types of batteries used, but only two are installed in each car, depending on whether ARS (active roll stabilization) is installed (use 60 Ah AGM) or not (use 10 Ah LiIon). How do I know? Because I read the whole damn document earlier

Yes, that is correct as shown in the screenshot I posted. I meant to put the word "different" in there. Sorry for the confusion and have edited to be clearer.

Mine typically can sit up to 2/3 weeks so far no trickle charger needed... But I will keep an eye on it.

Has anyone been able to actually to locate both of these batteries in either an X5 50i, or an X5 M50i?

I can easily see the battery in the front in the right rear corner (the passenger side of the car) of the engine compartment under a cover in my M50i; however, I am unable to find one in the back if there's actually one there for this model.

The main battery is in the back under the cargo area, the one in the engine compartment is the auxiliary.

If there's actually one there? What, you don't trust the info already given?

The pic below is from the online TIS...G1 is the main (starter) AGM battery located below the cargo floor...B110 is the positive battery cable...and B73 is the negative battery cable:

I have questions on how to charge battery.

I just got M50i, and I believe it has active roll stabilization. and I also have NOCO 3500 battery charger (https://www.amazon.com/NOCO-G3500-Ba...ct_top?ie=UTF8).

1. From the manual, there's starting aid terminal in the engine compartment, and can I just attach NOCO 3500 for charging (maintenance) the battery?

2. Does it charge both batteries if there are two?

3. NOCO 3500 has two different modes, 12V NORM & 12V COLD/AGM, and should I use AGM? (I used NORM for Lexus before)

I tried to find the answer before I use NOCO, but I can't get the exact answer yet. And any information will be appreciated

Attach your battery charger to the front marked charging points and it will charge both batteries. This is what I do with my trickle charger. AGM is the mode to use.

Ditto, both batteries will be charged when you use the engine bay jump start/charging terminals (make sure to use the correct terminal for negative clamp...some people assume they can attach to anything they "think" is grounded...don't guess...use the terminal BMW intended to be used).

If your auxiliary battery is Lithium...then make sure that you don't overcharge it (I think the TIS says don't use over 14.4 volts...and don't do a rapid charge). If you do, then the isolation switch will isolate the Lithium battery and you may get a check control message. So use low amps and a longer charge cycle.

Which models have the Li-Ion batteries?

Its not so much as to which model has an auxiliary Li-Ion battery...it's what options you have that a dual battery system is utilized to supply the vehicle with enough "juice" to power everything.

The dual systems uses an AGM battery...and if you have options that require additional power like Electro-mechanical power steering (EPS) with Integral Active Steering (HSR)...then you may have an auxiliary Lithium (but sometimes another smaller AGM) battery in the engine bay.

From realoem.com:

{regular 80AH/90AH/105AH AGM Battery}

{Lithium Battery used with EPS/IAS}

{auxiliary 60AH AGM Battery used with options listed below}

Here is a pic of the rear access to battery. It’s a terrible spot to install a charger lead wire. After looking everything over, the best and least troubled spot to use your trickle charger is the factory front jump points.
