That's for downloading the update to your phone over WiFi only vs using your data plan. You'll then connect your phone to the car to transfer the data to the car, after which it'll update the software. All very hypothetical of course...

After updating to 11/2019.40, it looks like they're building out their online store...I would bet that something is coming. At the very least, it looks like we might be getting some new features in the store.

Also, I noticed having my forward collision set to early from previous versions definitely are not the same on this update. Went back to medium and all good. I may be crazy, but I think the steering and the safety features are more polished after updating.

I'm not sure if this means anything, but I seem to be the only person who has ever had an OTA update (guinea pig?, jackass? )

At the time my vehicle's WIFi wasn't functioning outside the vehicle. My screenshot shows cloud>phone>car which is how it all went down, so it seems that my phone which had downloaded the update communicated with the car's wifi (which wasn't leaving the vehicle the time, but was working within my car)

Have you had it work after that? (It being OTA updates)

No, one and only one. I honestly think it must have been a mistake on BMW's part, when I had it and posted about it I thought that everybody was going to say "me too"...but nobody did.

Will these updates change any coding that was performed? When my dealer updated my software a couple months ago it did NOT change the ASS coding.

It depends which ECUs are updated. It is highly likely that coding you've done will get overwritten so keep a list / memory jogger of what you changed so you can go in and make the changes again after the update(s).

Yap. ASS memory coding happens to be in DME, the engine ECU. Since that's likely rarely touched, you retained your ASS coding through the update. But generally you won't retain FDL coding (everything Bimmercode does is FDL). VO coding, however, is generally retained through updates. So for example, coding anti-dazzle decoding off through the VO method would and has survived my pretty major update.

When I got the "complimentary" firmware update that BMW pushed through dealerships, my auto-start/stop was lost. I would assume that all coding will be lost with an eventual OTA push. Worst case is I'm pleasantly surprised. 😀

Stupid question, but if you coded a feature and BMW decides to release it later is there any issues or differences? I would guess the answer is no, but didnt know if the vehicle would crap itself if that was the case.

When they reprogram your vehicle, my guess is that the settings are returned to their default (safe) values. iDrive settings are likely preserved for customer convenience.

I may be wrong, but as a guy who has developed or managed firmware for much of his career, that's what I'd do or advocate for.

If it's a feature released as part of an i-step update then it will wipe the ECU that was previously coded and set BMW's desired configuration for your build year, model, options, region and i-step.

Thanks guys. I know that with iOS updates everyone talks about fresh installs and all. Didn’t know if it’s the same.

Be prepared for at least some settings to be reset to default values when the dealership does a software update.

The X5 is my 3rd modern bmw and all 3 (2013 3 series, 2016 x4 and 2019 x5) have always lost some settings when there was a software upgrade.

A few days ago I got one on the X5 as part of the rear camera recall and I lost at least 2 ... my seat settings and my personal wake word for the "hey bmw" feature.

I did not take the time to review everything so there may be more.
