A BMW engineer is looking at the car. Apparently they had to order a dust shield. Weird.

Wth. That seems odd. Let me know what you find out and if it helps.

I had an engineer look at mine and he deemed it normal. I also drove a similar car on m sport suspension and the sound was very similar to mine so I let it go.

A "dust shield", as in brake dust? There must have been something wrong with it, like bent or? But I fail to see what that has to do with the noise, especially if they only ordered one.

How dk we fix this? It's defining normal. Never had this problem in any of my previous vehicles. I'd rather not have turn the volume up..

Thanks
What tire and suspension do you have on your car? 22" with Air Suspension?
Continental 22' with adaptive M suspension. (No air)

I have no idea. I just said "OK".

The good news is the BMW engineer apparently agrees it's not normal. I think that's massive progress vs suck it up buttercup...which was the expected answer.

Interesting, I, like you, would have expected the "oh, that's normal, you'll have that with the 22" reply. Well, let's see what they actually do, pls let us know. I know that over the years I've heard different sounds from my tires depending on how much I inflate them and their size.

I believe they are waiting for BMW to decide. Certainly there is always a comfort vs looks compromise when using a 22” wheel on a SUV. The main issue is extra measures like foam in the tires may have been required to use the larger wheel tire combo to maintain the excellent ride standards one expects from a BMW. The X5M/X6M should also be having these issues??? I don’t believe this issue has popped up on asphalt roads so that could be why some are not as sensitive to hearing it.

Good points.

It's definitely less apparent on newly paved asphalt roads. Can the service department perform the foam insertion?

I remembered the stock 21" tires on the RS7 has foam pads in them to reduce road noise, not sure why they didn't put those in our tires (both continental). I do think that's something we can do to solve the issue. BTW I also have 22" contis with air and I can hear the hollow sounds even on asphalt.

I don't think you have a lemon at all. I have an M50i with 2 axle air suspension with 22" wheels wrapped in Continental Premium Contact 6s and it's by far the loudest street tires I have ever owned. Even louder than the Toyo All Terrains on my Tacoma.

I'm 1100 miles in on my Pirelli 22" P-Zeros M Sport. Dropped the air pressure by 5lbs per tire and have noticed a 20% reduction in the "hollow humming" noise. Yes, on fresh blacktop, the sound drops to 10%, but still there for sure. There is no way this is normal or acceptable. I noticed it on day 2 of owning the car... and notified my salesman, but have been unable to get it reviewed yet due to Covid. Pirelli has foam lined tires I see on their site.
https://www.pirelli.com/tires/en-us/...ncs-technology

Does anyone know if foam can be added to tires?

Has anyone seen this video?

He's on 22"s (747M) w/ air suspension, and I don't hear anything out of the ordinary in the video...not to mention he takes it to 165mph on the autobahn.

I also ordered 747M 22"s on my M50i (w/ DHP), and did so based on my test drive, which was an M50i w/ 22"s on air.

I didn't notice ANYTHING out of the ordinary, except how well it rode.
My test drive included long stretches of awful road as well.

BMW has probably sold thousands of X5's on 22"s thus far...could it just be that the majority of posters here aren't familiar w/ the ride quality and characteristics of a large diameter wheel (21" +) w/ a low profile performance tire???

I'm just curious, as my test drive was faultless, but now this thread makes me nervous!!!!

OP specifically has 22” Continentals - can’t tell which tires the M50i in the video has though it looks to be Pirelli’s.

BMW ordered some counterweights that bolt onto the lower control arms. I'm guessing this should have been factory installed?

The engineer noticed they were not installed.

Interesting. Let us know if that ends up helping. I'm still convinced it's all tire acoustics.

The pirellis AND conti's made the same amount of noise.

BMW installed counterweights on the front control arms and the noise is way better. It is close to what I would expect from a large diameter, small sidewall tire.

I guess the counterweight is supposed to be installed at the factory?

Either way...friend is happy!

Here is your smoking gun. 22”ers will never be a quit riding option but they shouldn’t be obnoxious. I thought there was some part amplifying/attenuating the road noise into the cabin.
