It depends on whether the dealer has the latest versions, their experience/competence, and if anything "randomly" goes wrong. It's seems to have been getting better (ie more reliable and more predictable) with time from reports. Normally, it's a couple of hours if everything is ready, but dealers often want it overnight in case something does go wrong. A few people early on had issues requiring weeks and hardware replacements to fix after a failed update, but we haven't heard of anything that bad for about a year now I think.

Folks at Connected Drive have asked me to get the latest software put on the car because the App has completely failed and they are certain that's where the fault lays.

What is the latest software version available today, both for the car as well as iDrive? I have a friend who is having issues and would like to let her know.

As of about 23-Aug-2020, latest available at competent dealers for G05/G06/G07 is 07/2020.45 aka S18A_20_07_545. Not sure what you mean by differentiating "the car" and "iDrive", it's all one big bundle of firmware for around 42-43 ECUs.

Thanks LexxM3. I was trying to differentiate the dealer only updates that update all ECU's vs the OTA update...aren't those two independant hunks of code?

I suppose not every ECU has to be updated for every bundle release, but I don't think it makes a difference whether that's OTA or dealer. At least we don't have enough time and volume on OTA yet to have noticed any difference. OTA update for 07/2020.xx is probably at least 4-6 months away if ever (there seems to be some theories that BMW may skip that one for OTA, just theories). You asked about latest — that will always be at competent dealers.
