2021 Mild Hybrid 40i gets worse EPA highway fuel economy? And other questions..

Hello all, new forum member here.

I am in the market for a g05 40i and happened to notice that the 2021s are rated 21/25/23 combined mpg compared to 20/26/22 combined for the 2020s. Curiously, the X7 40i gets 19/24/21 this year compared to 20/25/22 for the 2020. It seems strange that highway MPG would be reduced, let alone unimproved, considering the coasting function of the 48V system. Any ideas as to why this might be?

Second, I am curious as to whether braking feel in the 2021s would be compromised given the regenerative braking system?

Finally, I am considering the two-axle air suspension and have read the multitude of helpful posts on here comparing it with other suspension options. Specifically, though, I am wondering whether it improves the secondary ride quality of the X5 (i.e. comfort over smaller, sharper bumps, potholes, and broken sections of road). This would probably relate more to bushing compliance than the air springs themselves. I am unsure as to whether two-axle air has improved bushing/damper characteristics relative to the standard x-line suspension.

Cheers!

I am always a little leery of the EPA ratings. They have gotten better in recent years due to a change in their test methods. In my case, I had purchased a 2012 550ix. Take a look at the EPA ratings for the 550:

2011: 16/24
2012: 15/20
2013: 16/24

All three years were the same engine but what a huge difference.
With regards to the hwy mileage question, have you given thought to the 45e? I NEVER expected to buy a hybrid, but the test drive and tech improvement from prior hybrids, along with the 7500 tax credit got me to sign (it comes standard with air suspension btw). From your handle it appears you drive a lot (as I do), so for me getting 30miles everytime I charge will take my gas station visits from 2 times per week to once every 3-4 weeks. The car is just as fast as the X5 4.0 as well.

Probably just a testing anomaly unless the little weight of the system has some effect.

Maybe it helps you maybe not. I came from an F15 M50d with m adaptive suspension, 21" rims. Now driving a g05 45e with 2 axle air suspension and 22" rims. In the M50d I felt almost every imperfection in the road. With the 45e I seem to hover over them without really noticing. It's way more comfortable than the M50d.
