Can anyone enlighten me on why people use Acronyms and assume that everyone else knows what those acronyms mean?

I'm curious because I see it almost every day on a multitude of different forums but can't seem to figure out why.

In the top of the question requiring an answer Is it assumed that the answer can only be given by someone who knows? There is no other intention.

To save time and with the target audience in mind.

If I'm posting to all members, then I introduce the acronyms, but in peer level conversations I don't bother and never will.

Google often helps, or you could have searched this forum in this specific case, but if you can't find the answer then the post is probably not for you?

Agreed. I do the same. However, I don't think that's standard practice for many of the posters on this and other forums. Based on the posts in this thread I believe there were others that didn't know what the acronym meant either. I Googled it and the following is what I came up with. https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffsb&q=GWW+FSC&ia=web.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass. I'm just trying to understand why I see it in a slew of Forums where many of the members don't have a clue what the acronyms mean.

I think many members post here looking for information that's specific to their region. Some posters may not be aware that the information they are looking for doesn't apply to other regions. I'm new to BMW and it took me several months to realize some options and features don't exist for some regions and countries.

Determining the knowledge level of the forum members dictates how I communicate with those members. I always spell out the Acronyms first followed by the Acronym when posting in public forums where I don't know the knowledge level of the members in the forum. For example, Give Way Warning (GWW). From that point forward I will use "GWW" only since I've already explained the meaning at the very beginning. That is unless I already know that the group I'm communicating with already knows what it means. I'm not sure you can do that on a public forum and expect the majority of the readers and posters to know the meaning of the acronym.

I think in this case searching this forum would have given you the answer you needed, and you'd have regretted bothering

This is such a niche query that I think the use of an obscure acronym works as a natural filter. It's a specialised forum (coding being one focus) so there is an implied expectation of a certain level of knowledge. With this specific query, there may be 1 in 10,000 readers that might be able to answer, and they will know what GWW means.

My advice to OP - ask the same question on the cartech forum, but include the app code - 0x0150. Some of the FSC suppliers might be able to help, or BMW may have just made it unavailable.

This won't give you any additional TLA capability. All it will give you is a graphical representation of stop/give way signs in the console/HUD, or with coding, a graphic of a traffic light if approaching it at red too fast. Really not worth the hassle IMO.

Thank you. The question for me is not a small need of this option, but its unavailability in my region through the Official Sales Channels. The integrity of the picture is composed of trifles. Thank you once again. There was no malice in using the abbreviation, only the filter.
