Rear tailgate issue Pre-LCI
I have a 2020 X5 s40i with 35,000 miles on it. At the end of October it was in service at the dealership for an oil change and I mentioned to them that the rear tailgate was having issues about 1 in 10 times that I opened it. The issue was that the top part would open up fully but the bottom part would unlatch but not lower. The button on the lower part wouldn't do anything at that point. So like I said this was only about 1 in 10 times. They replicated the issue and replaced the lower spindle. I get it back and it's happening more frequently. I take it back and they replace the spindle again and some latches. They leave it overnight and test it and it's working and I go and pick it up. A few days later now the upper part is only opening up maybe 12-24 inches. Bottom part unlatches but only sometimes goes down. I take it back and they replace more parts and the soft close drives on the left and right and some other things. A few days later... same issues. They picked it up again today to get it back in. Each time it has been with the shop foreman.
I want to say that the dealership has been great of taking care of me during this time and has come to pick up the vehicle and either given me a 2024 X5 LCI or a 2023 X5 M50. Gas and free tolls. They really do seem to be doing their best but I don't really know what my other options are. I read posts about this problem in the past but it all seems to have been resolved after they replaced the spindle. The frustrating thing is that it was only happening 1 in 10 times before and now it's basically not functioning at all. Love the loaners but it's 3-7 days each time. Does anyone have anything helpful to add? If you would like the part numbers of everything that has been replaced I can add it. Notes: During the oil change they updated the software to the newest version (07/2023.58) due to another problem I was having with an occasional black infotainment screen. |

They might need to get the factory techs involved. Software or corrupted data messages could be part of the problem. Those can be harder to resolve. A loose, corroded, or crimped connection can work sometimes, but change the temperature and with expansion/contraction, might not work later.
