"For starters, the S68 is literally nut-and-bolt different from the S63 it replaces. However, the key updates are a new crankshaft, oil cooler, oil sump, upgraded turbochargers, and even a new electric VANOS system — which is a first, as all previous VANOS systems worked off of oil pressure."

I would say if vano goes from oil pressure actuated to electric actuated, then it is not a small change. CAM and oil passages in block and head maybe need to different. But if BMW did VANO control like they did valvtronics, then it is a very reliable implementation. The N52 (non turbo valvtromics I6) is probably the most reliable engine BMW has made, sorry not B58.
As for OP, if M60i is what you like, I don't have concern about LCI at all. If you think about it, you don't buy 1st year of model change or LCI, then you also don't buy the last year of model or preLCI, then you really have very narrow window to buy any cars at all. Plus for for M60i kind of car, the volume will be very smaller. Skipping 1 year doesn't have nearly enough data for BMW to change any adjustments if there is indeed a fundamental issue

TurtleBoy So is the X7 M60i having any consistent engine issues that are being reported?
Also, some helpful info here about the engine itself: https://www.bmwblog.com/2022/04/15/b...vision-engine/ ...Most of which you have already reported and seem to know. |

Seeing pretty good information come out of Belgium specifically for the X5 50e (LCI). Some people even invited into private rooms for viewing (no phones/cameras allowed) Rumors saying an official release day of Feb 7/8. Historically speaking, do we have a decent chance of seeing official images prior to then? Anyone? I am most concerned with "official" images for the M60i, and when they might leak.

The N55, the N54 successor, which sared some commonalities, was more similar to the N54 and even then it was a new engine for the most part, with sufficient changes to even the castings of both the heads and the block. Heck the B58TU in the X5 has sufficient different casting in the heads that it could have been a whole new engine, but reality is that the casting changed mostly happened to the head and its exhaust manifold being integrated to the head for better thermodynamic efficiencies. So in conclusions, the B58 is a completely different engine with maybe one or two things in common (design traits of a lot of engines really) with the N54……….. |

BMW has been making 4.4 V8s for a bit now. Maybe its a size they like. Just bacause two things share a displacement and turbo location, does NOT mean they are the same. |

Assuming same applies to X5 as X7 m60i is only an increase of 7hp over m50i but new 40i is an increase of 46hp.

Unless I lived within a mile or two of a good dealer, I personally wouldn’t touch a brand new engine/LCI vehicle in year 1 if I could in any way avoid it (especially with modern electronics). Let someone else work out the inevitable kinks.
Being first on the block/standing in line overnight for that IPhone just isn’t my style. |

Any guesses on how noticeable that is? One risk in assuming a big difference- People say the b58 is unrated. Maybe this new motor is just properly rated? |

The increase in HP had been noted to be 35HP (370HP) but the X7 has gone up to 375HP so the X5 40i will probably follow that.

I have not seen anything one way or the other. I would imagine given the increase in HP and torque it will be faster but I'm not sure anyone could notice a tenth of a second or so.
