Help - S68 V8 Exhaust Upgrade? ('24 X5 M60i)
TL;DR bolded for the main point!
I recently picked up a 2024 X5 M60i which comes with the S68 V8 and has an surprisingly muted exhaust note even after the run-in period and in the Sport Plus Drive Mode. This was my fourth X5, so I didn't push the dealer example during the test drive as that car was still in its run-in and I assumed I could expect something similar to my past cars. I was wondering if anyone has any information about aftermarket exhaust choices? I found this system when searching for accessories on BMW USA - and the page says "this fits your BMW" but in the description it says it was developed for the inline 6 cylinder. When I called a local service center they told me it's only eligible for installation in mainland China...Odd that it's listed on BMW USA, then? https://www.shopbmwusa.com/product/8...EXHAUST-SYSTEM https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRINT/8464 This all stems from an oversight I made when getting the car and not understanding there was a distinction between the M Sport Exhaust and an M Performance Exhaust. I assumed the M Sport Package Pro and M Sport Exhaust would deliver a prominent exhaust note. We recently picked up a 2023 M550i sedan with the previous gen N63 V8 engine and the exhaust is much more prominent and aggressive...I would've thought the latest powertrain (S68) would be an upgrade and not the other way around? I traded a 2020 Range Rover Sport Supercharged which I made no modifications to and was happy with, so I am not necessarily in need of anything ballistic to be satisfied but open to any recommendations or guidance. Window sticker attached if the existing equipment is needed! |

How BMW have managed to make a 4.4L twin turbo V8 sound like a Toyota Prius is truly an engineering feet!

dAHLer has released an exhaust for the M60i; I've been unable to find any video or audio clips of it. A customer service rep told me it sounds very similar to their M50i exhaust and that it will be available in the States in 2-4 weeks.

My guess is it is to comply Euro7 emission rule. Part of the Euro emission rule is sound level, sound emission if you will.

It is cat back exhaust. Bmw needs to proof whatever warranty repair you are looking for is caused by or at least related to the mod. But then I wonder how cat back exhaust can cause any issue.

I've already installed the Dahler valve controller and you can hear the gear change now... just.
Not a good V8 sound and cold starts are a-bit drone prone. Have the cat back exhaust getting installed within 2 years hopefully. Definately praying will then sound like a V8... Not a cheap exhaust upgrade at all for what you get. You have to BEND rear bracing arms and elongate the holes to fit it. Add washers etc. Hope new bolts are supplied. For this price would expect new custom brace included, as looks bodgy, as under tension okay, but compression bars can move. |

As first steps, have the resonator taken out and get the valve control installed. ~$900.
Performance is not lacking on the 60i so why drop $5k all in on the full build without a good bit of HP muscle added. This Would be my plan and then in the cars 3rd year….if still in my garage… look at doing more. Last edited by Aircooled; 01-28-2024 at 03:27 PM.. |

FWIW I just got an axle-back for my wife's X7 M60i; definitely adds back some of the missing V8 sound. Not super loud, but just enough for the purpose of the car:
