New G05 Owner (maybe) - Tuning Questions

Hey all - normally i'm lurking over in the G20 forums (M340i), but my fiance is likely buying an X5 on monday. Its a fairly optioned (premium package, luxury seat package, and 21" wheel) s40i CPO. What I'm curious about, is how much of a community there is around tuning the B58 here. Its obviously huge over on the G20/supra world, but I wasnt able to find much here in the G05 forum. I'm running MHD but wouldnt care MHD vs BM3 on her X5. Just a little more stage 1 power would be nice.

Any other gotchas/"something to consider" on the G05 is welcome!

A lot of old and lazy folks in here, so you wont get to much replies. You should have pretty much all the same options for the b58 not matter the chassis, I guess? lol

Its not very active.....Demographics of people buying 40i doesn't place a high priority of more power. Especially when that means loosing the powertrain warranty on an expensive to repair vehicle.

I have run BM3 on stage 1 and stage 2 on my x5 40i. As well as MG Flasher. Both have a noticeable power increase, but I prefer MG flasher.

I’m running the JB4 on Map 2. I have not connected the EWG yet. Runs very smooth and there is a noticeable power increase to the butt dyno. I am sure it would feel quicker without my heavy all-terrain tires too.

I’m running JB4, BMS intake, CTS catless dp, and M performance exhaust. Also, I did swap out coils and spark plugs.

Racechip is also an option. Easy to install and remove.

I am running HPS intake, VRSF catless downpipe, and JB4 in map 2 with the NGK LI plugs. The JB4 has definitely made the car noticeably quicker. The car definitely is pretty fuel restricted and WMI doesn’t interest me so planning on a B58tu HPFP and bootmod3 within the next few weeks.

Regular M Sport Exhaust? Have you considered a resonator delete or anything like that?

Not an m-sport. Its an xline with the valve opened. Im thinking about deleting the second cat and then replace muffler. From what I have read the catless dp and res delete makes it annoying to drive.

this!

one guy was denied warranty claim on his X3 M40i after his dealership did a deep dive and found he had tuned it prior to bringing it in for service. then he bought an X5 45e and wanted to tune that. some never learn… lol

zgb2008 I had a catless dp and resonator delete with M Performance Exhaust and it was nice - but it was a different engine (n55). No drone on highway and 99% the same sound as when I had an Akrapovic exhaust and catless downpipe - a little louder in comfort though. I would go catted for the g05, though - just a different purpose for that vehicle - no need to squeeze out every last HP, or deal with the smell of catless for a family vehicle.

PS. Given you have a 2019 x5...you already have the b58 tu pump!
I just discovered this as I was also looking into a tu pump.

Also, any videos of the sound of your x5?

AlpineG05 Any reason why you didn't go with a flash tune? Concerns with warranty? Any videos of the sound of your exhaust?

nZtiZia Hmm - there are a ton of variables out there. It would be interesting to see what exactly the facts were in this case. I wouldn't completely rule out a flash tune because generally they're super reliable, and many, many people have flash tunes and no issues on the b58. The dealership really has to be able to tie the issue with the warranty claim to your flash tune to be able to deny a warranty claim. But everyone has their own level of comfort with things. What you mention is definitely something to consider in the decision.

I will take a video of the sound today, honestly, I am not real happy with it yet as it’s a little tingy and raspy. I have a stock non-m sport muffler so that isn’t helping. Thursday of next week the guy that does my exhaust work on cars is going to cut out the oval resonator and see how that sounds then maybe do a custom muffler set up. I found a m240 performance muffler for 250 we may try to retro fit.

Also, did some digging and now see what you are saying about the 2019 having the TU HPFP. It doesn’t make sense that nothing on the internet identifies that. I am now wondering if an e30 mix would be safe to run with bootmod3.

zgb2008 check out the work of kern417 on youtube for info on the b58. The man is putting out some solid, in-depth content. Just youtube "kern417 b58".

I actually just started watching his videos. His information has helped me immensely figure the engine out. Thanks!

Just wanted to update you. Got the DME unlocked and BM3 flashed as well as the res delete done. The disappointing part was finding out the B58c which is in the 2019 and 2020(I believe) has no stage 2+ maps available with MHD or BM3. I am very impressed though with the ease of BM3. Stage 1 and 2 93oct both run super smooth. May try to flash MHD and see if I like it more, which the integration with Xhp interests me because BM3 has no transmission support for the x5.

Here is video of startup, catless with res delete and both valves opened. Cat heater off and GTS start up on.

Thanks for the update, brother! "The disappointing part was finding out the B58c which is in the 2019 and 2020(I believe) has no stage 2+ maps available with MHD" - what, really?! even for 2019? I'm going to reach out to MHD to confirm for my VIN...

Take some drive-by's if you can - would be super intersted to see how it sounds under throttle!
