M50i Exhaust

I came across this YouTube video of an owner claiming the Engine Sound settings in the M50i affects the exterior exhaust note of the car.

Is there truth to this?

I just did some digging around and it turns out the video was true. I actually have ASD coded off with Bimmercode. I changed the ES setting in my car and I can definitely hear burps and pops when it's in sporty+sport plus mode. In sporty+comfort mode, the exhaust has a deeper tone, but there's no pops.

Ok, I tried it today. Sport + with Sporty Engine Sound had more cracks and pops than with the balanced level.

My experience as well! Good to know we can slightly change how our exhaust sounds on the M50i.

Hello All, I want to ask about my X6 M50i still has 800 miles on it but the Exhaust sound is the same in Comfort and Sport mode. I seen another car at the dealer still new and i was able to tell the difference in exhaust sound when i changed the mode. Can anyone help and tell me what could be the issue? possible actuator defect and flaps not opening?

Can you confirm if your car Engine Sound settings are set to “sporty”? General settings>Engine Sound>Sporty. I have a 2021 M50i and I can confirm that my car performs the same in the video above and it is NOT coded (not even sure if you can do that).

I did set it to sport and also set it to based on the mode being selected. So i went to the dealer and they have not heard of such thing that the flaps open when in sport even though every video on youtube says that it does. I even tried it on M850i and i was able to notice the difference in exhaust sound. but mine does not have the popping sound.

2022 model? Honestly, most ( not all) dealers /sales guys won’t know much about the details of whether pops and bangs occur depending on engine sound. Not surprised they didn’t know much or ever heard of this.

Yes this is a 2022, I went to the service advisor office for 45 minute trying to explain to him and told him you can check other vehicles but he was not convinced.

My experience so far.
The three engine sounds :
Sporty: Sound pumped thought speakers and open exhaust valve.
Balanced: Sound pumped thought speakers with the valve closed.
Quiet: No Sound pumped through speakers and closed valves.

you could choose having the engine in sport + to make transmission down shift and up shift in higher rpm to make crackles and pops or even configure a individual were only transmission is in sport +, but that unfortunately makes the cars jerky while driving in the city.

I think expectations should be tempered. When engine is in sporty exhaust sound level and car is in sport +, I hear pops/burbles (bangs are a stretch). They are subtle. By no means are they AMG/exotic car levels. It also doesn’t occur with every down shift.

I’m guessing this is something they added for the M50i models.
