Measurement request: X5 M50i tailpipe diameter
My M50i isn't expected to arrive until January, and I live in Belgium, so I've never had the opportunity to physically "see" or "drive" one yet. Even the folks at the American BMW dealership in Germany haven't actually seen one yet. I "might" be the first American to have a US spec M50i brought over to Europe. Not sure on that, but it's quite possible.
I'm researching a few exhaust modifications.... I'd like to add some "tips" to the tailpipes, but I have to make sure they fit, they aren't too wide, and they aren't too long either. So, I'm hoping someone with an X5 M50i will be kind enough to go take a couple quick measurements for me. I'd really appreciate it. 1) The outside diameter of one each of the 4 tailpipes (I believe all 4 are the same diameter, but not 100% sure) 2) The distance between the inner-most sections of the two tailpipes (left side or right side shouldn't matter). I "believe" it will be about 2 inches, but again, I'm not sure. Quite simply.... how far apart are the tailpipes from one another? 3) The distance from the tip of the tailpipe, to the inner-most edge of the exhaust trim ring (So the tips won't stick out too far) 4) Lastly, if you could take a picture of the exhaust (left or right.... doesn't matter)... absolutely DEAD-ON STRAIGHT.... Looking straight at the tailpipes through the exhaust trim ring. I'm trying to find out if they are dead-center of the trim ring, or slightly low, slightly high, or slightly to the left or right. That would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance. Please let me know if anything I said doesn't make sense. It's tough to ask for specific measurements using text only. |

Thank you for starting this thread Ninefourteener. Tim or other members, What size after market CF or any other tail tips should i insert over the existing tips? From Inner tail tips to outer chrome outlet. Don't want tips sticking out. Trying to achieve more refined black tail tips and black exhaust outer ring. And trying to avoid ordering multiple sizes from ebay. Thank you.

Thanks Tim. If they are 2.5 OD, just "eyeballing" it, it appears that the pipes are only 1 inch apart from one another. Just an estimate.
That means that "maybe" I can get a 2.5" to 3" tip.... and the tips may be touching eachother. can you confirm how far apart the two pipes are? |

Awesome Tim..... thank you.
How far from the end of the tailpipe is it to the inside of the exhaust trim ring? It appears to me... the only way to go would be to use a standard 2.5" exhaust tip. Anything that "increases" the diameter won't fit without mashing up next to one another. I have the shadowline trim..... so I think a set of black chrome non-expanding tips would look great. Now I just need to figure out how long they need to be. |

You’ve prob got another 2 inches or so for the sleeve itself so around 4 inches in total length

The cleanest way would probably be to cut the oem tips off and weld whatever you want on. Otherwise you would need to go 2.75" Inlet to be able to slide over the oem tips

I just tried this Sure Bilt adapter 17517 from autozone and it fits on One pipe perfectly and slides little more deep in to another. It can be made to work on both. size tried was 2 1/2" ID (Inlet Diameter) X 2 1/2" OD (Outlet Diameter) Length is about 3 3/4". I think anything over 4" in length will stick out at least on One tip.
I am not an expert in this kind of stuff so maybe someone can help confirm this. Last edited by Habsone; 10-21-2019 at 06:56 PM.. |

Ultimately I'm going to wait until my car arrives to make a firm decision..... but based on what I've seen so far, it will be difficult to use anything other than an OEM BMW "sleeve/slip-on" style tailpipe trim.
The pipes are too close together to really get anything larger than a 3" diameter... and even that would cause them to touch, and possibly rattle. then... these's only 2" of extra room for length, which makes it impossible to find a tip, and most of them are a minimum of 6-7 inches long. I "think"... that an OEM BMW tip will slightly increase the appearance of size, and possibly add an inch of length. Otherwise, the only option is a complete axleback replacement. Now.... I'm trying to find an OEM BMW model that came with a 2.5" stock exhaust tip. It's the only way to search for an OEM BMW trim piece that will fit correctly. M cars generally came with 2.8" tips... too large. Most non-M BMWs came with smaller than 2.5, so I'm having trouble finding a similar model. I am "thinking" maybe an older X5 50i might have come with the same size muffler pipes? Not sure. still researching. |

It was easy to slide on and looked perfect. The problem is going to be with finding the right length as Ninefouteener mentioned.

I bought a 2.5x3.5x6 tip on amazon just to test fit and its a no go. The length seems fine but it is too wide to even fit inside the opening of the bumper. I ordered 2.5x3x6 and going to see how that will fit

Tim.... i think those first ones may be PERFECT.
However, that 2nd set (with the 3 adjustable exterior screws).... that design is inherently flawed. I've tried using that style of tip before, and no matter what I did, it was unstable, and eventually fell off.... twice. I'm sorry that the 3.5 tips didn't fit.... but that is useful infornation for everyone. I have been researching as well, and I "think" the OEM tips from the E85 BMW may be the correct match (not the 3.0 version with oval tips, but the smaller engine version). Hopefully between the 2 of us, we can come up with a solution that works. I unfortunately, am still waiting in my car though... lol. Post pics when you get that 1st set.... I think they might be perfect! Do you have the amazon link for that 1st set?? (2.5 x 3 x 6.... with the 1 adjustment bolt) |

Here's a nice weld-on tip that will look great, high quality, and won't have the issues with "bolting on".... and they are shorter... which is mb good.
If those 2.5 - 3 work well.... I may get these: http://www.redtailperformance.com/Ex...ance_RTP-039B/ |
