https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=51_A141 What I did learn for sure if that the description of "aspherical" is "wide-angle", which is not present for USA models. So still investigating, but thank you!

The "Korea" and "Gulf" states use some of the other part nbrs like #3, #4, & #5. You have to read/answer the question in the supplemental info column. It asks if you're in the Korea or Gulf markets...and if the answer is "YES"...then those are the selections for those countries. If it it list those countries or other option codes (like the driving assistant) and it says NO (and you have that option)...then you would NOT select that part nbr because the answer should be YES if you have that option.
But if you go over to the part nbr column...some of the part nbrs are the same regardless if the answer is yes or no. And for those that may have missed the reason...it was mentioned early on in the thread that the reason why those mirrors aren't offered in the USA is that the US DOT mandates for a plain mirror on the driver's side and a convex mirror on the passenger side that MUST contain the warning that "OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR". The United States, Canada, Nepal, India, and Saudi Arabia also require this warning on the passenger side mirror...that's why there are specific part nbrs for the Gulf states...that warning is written (in I believe) Arabic. The info below is from the US DOT document on Rear Visibility Enforcement: https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.do...-final_tag.pdf

Wonder why BMW does not introduce the side view camera like in the etron. Yes, not cost practical but one more luxury for those who want to lighten their pockets

I got a price of $107.84. Not bad. Probably worth upgrading.

Just wanted to leave a sincere note of gratitude for the OP Fast400 for reminding me/us of this and Qsilver7 for the help with part numbers. Found a pair (driver and passenger) on eBay in Spain, got them in last week, installed today. Absolutely massive visibility improvement on the driver side, and lesser non-trivial improvement on the passenger side in the outside corner. Everything functional, but learned that it's not just the mirror on the passenger side that doesn't have the auto-dimming function, it is not even wired for it (but heating and blind spot lights work fine on both sides and driver side has the auto-dimming like stock).
For those that frankly take a bit of an arrogant attitude that "you don't need this if mirrors are adjusted right", well, sorry, but you're just wrong and US DOT is wrong (screwing us Canadians in the process as we tend to get what US gets) — these aspherical mirrors are life changing. Seriously.

- driver side: 51167441443 - passenger side (what I got): 51169491786 - passenger side (best match): 51169491790 The difference for passenger side between "what I got" and "best match" is the lack of the "objects are closer than they appear" writing on "what I got".

^^ Thank you. Just order the same set on ebay for $225 shipped. Hopefully it doesn't take a month to get here. My last three cars all had euro mirrors and its hard to go back to the standard US one

If you scroll back up to post #23...in my quote to Lexx...there’s a link to realoem.com. Click that link and then click on the part number that you tried to order. This will take you to another page that lists other BMWs that use the same part...but most importantly...it will list other part Nbr’s that are retroactively exchangeable. Copy then paste this other number (ie “BMW xx xx x xxx xxx”) into a google/internet search box to find vendors that may be selling that part number. Don’t forget to try eBay & amazon.com (for either part Nbr’s) because you may find sellers in Europe that still have the mirrors (some may be used & some may be new) especially since they are more plentiful over there. Good luck. Basically its simple to find the superseded part Nbr’s using any of the online part database sites like realoem.com or bimmercat.com.

Thanks to you guys i just got my set from ebay. Looks 100% identical to my stock F95 X5M mirrors with dimming/blind spot monitoring except the new one doesn't have any writing on the passenger side which is even better.
The part numbers are: driver side: 51167441443 passenger side 51169491786 Paid 225 shipped on ebay and took about a week to get here from Europe. 5 minute install for both sides. Alan

That was one thing that kind of surprised me versus my previous car: how small the side-view mirrors are on this vehicle. My Audi S7 had a lot longer/wider mirrors that offered a larger view.
I was in a defensive driving class and one thing the instructor mentioned was that most people set their mirrors incorrectly. The side-view mirrors should be used specifically for the blind spot and not for the rear. I was taught the complete opposite and adjusted the mirrors to see more to the rear, positioned so I can barely see the body of the car, but he said that was wrong. You should tilt your mirrors away from the car, directly into your blind spot and you shouldn't be seeing any part of your car in those mirrors. I adjusted my mirrors so they are tilted away from the vehicle more and it made all the difference; there's no more blind spot. It was a little disconcerting at first--and it took a little while to get use to the mirror positioning--but it's so much better. Try it out for yourself. Adjust the mirrors out more away from the vehicle directly into that blind spot. You should NOT be seeing any of your car in the mirrors. Last edited by Frenetic; 06-12-2020 at 07:10 AM.. |

^^^ even still...you won't have the viewable area that the wide angle mirrors provide. Regardless if you have your driver's side mirror set correctly where you can't see the side of the car...or if you have it set incorrectly and can see the side of the car...it only offers an approx 17° viewable area when looking in the plain 1:1 ratio DS mirror. The wide angle (aspherical) mirror on the driver's side offers a 45° viewable area.
The increased viewing area is what is gained by going with the wide angle mirrors. And its easy to dismiss this gained viewing area if you've never used them...but most people that do...it becomes clear as to why their usage gets extolled. Its not just about the "blind spot" ...its the blind spot and everything else you can see that makes them safer.

Yes, but properly adjusted, you really aren’t missing anything with a normal mirror. Any car to the side is either captured in the mirror or directly visible without having to look over your shoulder.
Try it out for yourself. Tilt them out way more than you would normally or feel comfortably doing and see for yourself. You’ll eventually settle in on an optimum position, but again, the key is to forget about trying to see behind you in those mirrors as that is not their primary intent. |

The main issue for me is the blind spots at the sides of the car, critical when backing up in tight spaces. I have to lean to the left and to the right/center to see both. So I can appreciate what the replacement mirror offers.

Just think there is a reason why the rest of the world gets the wide angle mirrors...
I've tried the whole angling the mirror all the way out to eliminate the blind spots on my last two x5's and it simply isn't nearly as good as these non US spec wide angle mirror. Being able to just catch the edge of your car AND still see everything helps you place where you are in relation to the other cars around you. Also if you move your standard US mirrors all the way out you start to lose the ability to see if someone is coming up directly behind you at a fast rate of speed and cut out into the lane you want to be in. Once you've tried them you can't ever go back. Its like comparing 720P vs 4K TV. Nobody is going to ever say 720p is better... Alan
