I never understood those expensive speaker options (not only with BMW, all brands). You pay >3500$ extra for listening to superior speakers but you only listen to them when there is cabin noise. And while you are driving.

IMHO the HK speakers is the best value for money. Spend the money you save on a decent speaker setup for in your living room. (not home theater systems or streaming devices, real speakers)

I'm not arguing that the B&W isn't good. They are superior speakers. But the environment / situation when you listen to them is far from optimal. A lot of the fine details get lost or won't be noticed. So why are you paying premium for it?

I find the acoustic glass to be the factor that makes the B&W stand out. My cabin is quiet enough that I can actually enjoy a high-end sound system in a moving vehicle, and the B&W system is the equal of, or better than my previous B&O system for sound quality.

I believe due to the battery pack size of the 45e, it will qualify for the max tax credit of $7,500 in the US. So a lot of us will also probably get it for tax benefits.

However, the ordering guide doesn't make any sense. They don't offer B&W, soft closing doors or the cooled/heated cupholders. And then in the UK, they not only offer all of those, they also have the ambient air and display key. Something you can't even get on the 40i or 50i in the US. I hope the update the ordering guide because the B&W speakers have better sound quality and nice lighting inside them.
Al of the options you mention could be nice to have but would not be a deal breaker for me. It's a shame they want to position the 40i and 45e as lower end vehicles by not making all options available.

I have soft close but the doors are so heavy they softclose them selves.

B&W is nice off course. It's 3500 $ it has to be. I have HK and acoustic glass. When I drive electric in town in complete silence i am perfectly happy with HK. The lightning is nice and the covers look much better with B&W.

Display key: I have it and I haven't used it ever. Normal fob and CD on your phone I much easier. It is to big and you can't program both with the same profile.

Ambient air I have for ionisation. Not for the car scent. Can't compare with or without. The scent I never use.

Heated and cooled cup holders I don't have. Can't judge in that but I wouldn't use it much.

I haven't tested an X5 with HK, hoping I can find one later to test it out. I honestly really want the B&W mostly for the lighting...but after thinking about it, maybe spending $4200 on it isn't the best thing. I have soft closing doors on my 535i and I really would want them. I also haven't had a chance to look at the cooled and heated cupholders but I figured it would be nice to have.

I would not get the display Key, it lags so much. It's just interesting that they offer it in Europe and not in the US when the X5 is made in the US...

Maybe by keeping the options low, they can manufacture them a lot faster?

I did wish the air suspension wasn't standard. I know the ride is better but people say it's unreliable. Anyone have any comments on this option?

The unavailability of the B&W system, the acoustic glass, or the leather dashboard are really making me think twice about ordering the new 45e after being very happy for the past 3 years with the 40e.

To me, the entire reason that this model exists is for people who don't want to have to choose between economy, performance, and luxury, they can have it all. Positioning it as some low end model, with even less option availability than the sDrive 40i, takes away from that purpose.

Strange, because in Belgium at least the individual leather dashboard, accoustic glass, soft close, cupholder heating/cooling, B&W , display key, etc... are all available options....but at a hefty price...5300 Euro (6000 USD) for the B&W...I have de HK in mine and it's more then enough !

Red calipers?!

Looking at the Pricing Guide, it looks like BMW is actually giving us a choice of red calipers? I'm shocked. I don't see that option on any other U.S. BMW. They are usually reserved for the BMW M Performance retrofit of something special like the M2 CS. This must be an error (I hope I'm wrong).

Not an error. For 2021MY, the MSport brakes will be available in Blue and Red for the 40i, M50i and 45e.

If you can hold out another year it may be different for MY22. Seems like they are offering a "scaled down" version this year and hopefully more options like Europe has next year.

Guys, Am I missing something as the ordering guide makes no sense at all. Compared to 2020 40i, we loose the ability to order Driver recorder, acoustic glass, leather dash, cooled/heated cupholders, SoftClose on the 45e. Is that the case with only 2021 45e or is the 2021 40i going to face the same options cuts?

It is just the 45e. The only "loss" for the 40i is the B&W audio.

No, unfortunately it hasn't been released, or at least posted, yet. Only the changes for MY21 have come out.

You can get the drive recorder with the parking assistance package. But, yes all the other cool features are not available. I was looking forward to the 45e but now not so much. I wonder if corona virus had any effect on this or BMW was planning to launch the 45e with limited options anyway.

Great news! I have a thing for red calipers and have always grumbled about why BMW picked an ugly blue for their sub-par-looking fixed calipers. I love the look of the Brembos on Porsches and MBs .

Do you know if the red calipers will be an option on other cars like X3M, M2 Competition, etc.?

The history and meaning of BMW M GmbH colors:

"BMW M GmbH was founded in 1972 as a business unit for the sporty products of the BMW brand. At that time the official name was still BMW Motorsport GmbH. It wasn't until 1993 that it became BMW M GmbH.

The newly created sports car division was meant to combine and professionalize BMW's racing activities under a single, unified corporate identity. The unifying element for all of this was to be a crisp color scheme. Designer Seehaus was part of the team in charge of it, and he was the one who created the BMW M colors of blue, violet and red.

Blue stands for BMW, red for motorsport and violet for the unique combination of the two."

the color has historical and brand significance.

Great news, red is now an option and still on brand for BMW ///M.

Red calipers have been confirmed for 3er, new 4er and X5s. Black calipers for X7s. No word on X3/4 or X3/4M.

If you go to build an X3M online, it's changed to 2021 MY, and red calipers do not appear to be an option.

Just wondering... if I order a 45e in the US today, how long will I have to wait on average to get it? I suppose it depends on options but a rough estimation would be enough. It is to compare to average waiting time in EU 😉

The first date of production for the US 45e's is 6/20, I would imagine delivery would be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after that. The two orders I have seen have production dates of 6/20 and 6/26 so they should get theirs in July sometime.

It's a shame that is goes so fast. The wait is part of the fun. (Unless the waiting is almost longer as the time you are going to drive the thing)

Several Europeans here with an initial build juist before or in the COVID closure of Spartanburg are pushed so far back that they will receive their car 12 months after ordering. I will hopefully get my 45e in July also 12 months after ordering.

Begin March, before the covid shit hits the fan, I asked my dealer how long it would take to get a 45e delivered if I would order at that time. Answer: November, December.
I think we have another perception of time in Europe
