S-drive vs sport+

So ive been searching around for a while and cant find an answer

I have an M50i with air suspension,

In sport+ all settings go to max sport mode, including transmission and engine, this is confirmed from the setting of sport individual

But shifting gear selecter to the left(S-drive) changes the transmission even more (atleast thats what i feel)

Can anyone confirm this?

You are correct. Before the introduction of the driving experience switch (Eco-Pro/Comfort/Sport/Sport+)...BMWs (as old as the e38/e39 era) have had a sport mode that was actuated by using the gear shift lever (STEPTRONIC) or by moving the gear shift lever from D back into 4th or 3rd...and this changed the tranny’s shift map and RPM.

{Sport Mode from my old 1997 e38 740iL}
-Take note of SPORT MODE under the SHIFT PROG info on page 62 and the yellow highlighted text on page 63 below from the 1997 owners manual-

{STEPTRONIC “DS mode” info which debuted around the 1998/99 model year in the e38 & e39}

This still exists with the modern BMWs...when you move the gear shift lever over into the M/S gate....it affects the car’s transmission shift map. When you utilize it along with the driving experience switch (which brings the suspension, steering, and throttle mapping into the mix) it maximizes the driving experience.

See the chart below & take note of the columns for shift speed & shift RPM when the shift lever is in D versus DS (with DS being the gear shift lever pushed over into the M/S gate). Although the chart is from the 3 series forum...the information can be extrapolated over to other BMW models with the same technology:
