JB1 review (yes, the 1, not the 2)
Why would anyone want the JB1 when they can get the JB2? Well, coming from a chipped Audi S4 (320hp/388tq), the car was a blast, but although Audi tuners say that the engine is still smooth with factory-like drivability... it was not. You *knew* when the turbos kicked in, and it was a pain to do semi-quick accelerations. You had with anticipate the boost coming on strong, and the let up off the gas. I didn't want to deal with that anymore, and that's why I went to the N54 to begin with. incredibly smooth torque curve, with almost non-existent turbo lag.
The JB1 seems like it would give me some extra power (10-15% more), be a fun little project to get under the hood, and still give me that smooth power delivery... all for only $185 shipped with 14 days to change my mind. Well, all I have to say is that the car just pulls harder. Period. Same torque curve, but just more of it (its 11, its one more...). No 'feeling the turbos', no boost spikes, no boost coming on too fast. No CELs to worry about, no over-boosting, no weird starts, no worrying about turbo failures, or boost leaks. Install took 20 minutes with a friend for a second pair of eyes (i've pulled ECUs before though). First 2 minutes had me a little concern since getting off the gas seemed to cause some non-smooth moments, but by the next day, everything was back to the wonderfully smooth N54 experience. Gas milage dropped to 12.5mpg *but* only because I was hammering it. Next day, same exact mpg numbers that I normally see. I'm *very* happy with the JB1, and seeing the nice smooth torque curve for the JB2, I plan on upgrading to that when the weather gets a bit warmer (shredding the winter tires as it is). And a note on Terry: I was one of those guys in the beginning that started blocking his posts, as I watched Vishnu's Procede develop over the months. However, I was wrong. Very wrong. Terry is delivering a great product at a *great* price. He was quick to send out my order, quickly responded to the few questions that I asked, and made the entire process just that much more enjoyable. Instructions were direct and easy to follow. Is the JB as "sophisticated" as the Procede? No. Is it producing the power that the Procede is? Probably not, but, as I will track this car, I probably won't take it to the strip because I don't care how fast it is 0-60, or in a 1/4 mile. And when I tracked the S4, it took it out of chipped mode, and I was still one of the faster audis at Watkin's Glenn that day (more so than the 4.2 V8), so I don't need the extra 10-20whp for that either. anyway, *very* happy with the JB1, going for the JB2 come spring, and maybe a little H pill too!

Thanks for the nice review. I also have been very biased, bought and used the PROcede and have never been open minded until I bought the JB2 and have been very impressed about the performance gains and the drivability of this tune.
Currently I am back on the PROcede V2, mainly to support the community with my experience I got working for months with this device. I hope that the PROcede V2 will have the same stability and drivability as the JB2, combined with some features and some additional power gains. However, I have a deadline. When the V2 will not meet or exceed my expectations until March/April 2008 I will definitely switch to a different tune and sell the PROcede. Enjoy the JB1, I know that you will enjoy the JB2 as well. I hope for a 13 psi 91 octane tune from Terry, providing the same smooth power as the JB2 with some additional power . I stick on 91 octane to have no restrictions when I will not be able to get 93 octane ( which has rarely happened in my life, but it has happened ). Cheers, Eugen |

Don't let the extra power of JBS2 alarm you in any way. The distribution is extremely smooth a stock like delivery if not smoother with no lag present even in lower rpm, unlike some other tuners.

Thanks for the writeup! I'm always surprised by how few people upgrade from the JB1 to the JB2. It's a great kick in the pants for the money, with almost no downsides. It also doesn't require the solenoid bypass so the car is 100% stock looking with the hood open.

Great write up I also came from a mod S4, just like you. I was clicking away every post when Terry was on the hot seat. On the fence a long time observing the Proceed... well, went with Juice Box a few weeks back. I originally wanted JB1 for the smoothness and safety, then I had an opportunity to drive a JB1 and a JB2, after back and forth with Terry, he installed a JB2 on my car. Filled up the car on Christmas day and when to the back mountain (where there is no people or car around) and rip the car with anything I can thing of, had a blast, no hiccup or cell, car ran smooth! Empty a whole tank of gas in one afternoon. For me the JB2 feels like JB1 in term of smoothness, my car still drive like stock until I punch it, JB2 has a lot more power vs. JB1. I’m a totally satisfy customer. When Terry was installing the unit, he took it slow to show me how to install correctly step by step, asked him a ton of questions while I was there, customer service don’t get better then that. Terry is an awesome guy to talk to

So JB2 essentially has no turbo lag, a la stock? Maybe Eugen you can comment since you've had both, does v2 have a more lag aspect to it?

Terry, I thought I had seen in the install manual, page 11, that you *do* need to bypass the left solenoid? Or are you saying that it doesn't *require* it?

I can attest that the JB2H behaves in this manner: "the engine is still smooth with factory-like drivability".
(That is on 93 octane and no hot weather driving yet) |

Terry, since the SSTT doesn’t require a bypass and runs ~11.50 peak psi and the JB2 runs about the same boost would it be possible to get away without the bypass when running JB2? Is the JB2 bypass there just to make sure a limp mode doesn’t occur?

You'll get some weird boost behavior as well, such as flutter, especially when the ambient temps go up. I'd say do the bypass, but you can try it both ways.

I have not seen one post about the SSTT going into limp mode. It seems like the JB1 and SSTT are similar with regard to driveability and performance. If the convenience of super easy install is worth an extra $200, go for the SSTT. If it is not go for JB1. IMO these are the best options for the street and occasional track days.
