I think i may have scheduled my oil change too early!!
Ok my first oil change is scheduled for tomorrow and im just finding out from this forum that i was reading the mileage for maintainence wrong. It was saying that the oil chane was 10,000 miles and i have 9500 miles. Well all of a sudden it changed to saying 9000 miles for oil change and thats when i realized that those miles are how much disatnce you have remaining. So now i have a scheduled oil change that is 9000 miles too early. Should I still go and see what they do or just cancel it and spare myself the embarassment?

How many miles do you have on your car?
Alot of us changed our oil shortly after the break-in period to try to rid the engine of metal shavings, just to be safe. I changed mine at 1500 miles. Worth the money to me. Now I'll follow the oil life indicator going forward.

Had mine done at 5k miles (intentionally) which would make that about ~10k too early, but do a search on the forum - there's many members who got their first oil change done early.

The maintenance plan covers an oil change every 15k miles or every twelve months if you drive less than 15k per year -- Anything more than that and you pay for it out of pocket.

The "to change early or not" debate will never end, but if you want your oil changed before it is "due" you'll have to pay. Otherwise, wait for the car to tell you when it needs changing. If you have BMW Assist, the car will call the shop for you!

It's a waste of money to change the oil before 15K miles. Everyone has their own opinion on this, this happens to be mine, as well as the recommended interval in the Service Manual made by engineers who know a lot more about our engines and synthetic oil than I do.
If you are worried about deposits from the break-in period, go ahead and do an oil analysis and decide from that. My 2 cents. |

Remember that BMW warranties your car for 50,000 miles. Basically they guarantee if you change your oil every 15,000 miles your car will last for at least 50,000 miles. Unless of course you drive your car under less than ideal conditions. That would include cold weather, hot weather, stop and go, sustained highway speeds, or pretty much anywhere outside the laboratory. Very little harm in changing the oil too often as opposed to not often enough. We had our 325 changed at 3,000 miles and counted it as one of the free ones.

I have only 2,078 mi, but I'm way overdue for an oil change... hahaha.. $80 is not bad for an oil change considering if you do it yourself (assuming you have all the equipment) it'll cost you $57 for the filter and oil, and 1-2 hours of your time.

The thing about synthetic oil is that it does not break down over time, so, in theory, it can go for a very long time. However, it gets dirty, VERY dirty, hence the need for a change.
BMW only recently boosted the recommended interval to 15K, and claim other fluids are lifetime in the car. Depends on what YOU call $$lifetime$$. I change mine every 7500, half the interval, and what other manufacturers claim is a good lifespan for synthetic. Hence, I pay for some changes, BMW pays for the others. Said oil change should cost about 80-100 dollars. |
