Click/creak in suspension or steering rack?

For the past two days I've been noticing some odd noises coming from the front end of the car. It sounds like a sort of clicking or creaking sound. With the car stationary I'll hear it if I turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. Sometimes I'll also hear it if I stop turning the wheel around center and then start turning again. I heard a bit of it while driving in a straight line earlier today too.

Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? I'm planning to get it to the dealership as soon as possible (maybe tomorrow morning)

I have heard the same clicking noise. It is independent of the steering. It is most noticeable when the car is stationary. For an owner new to the M series, I have noticed many noises...such as the tin can noise, etc. Just monitor if the car is running well. I have heard all of the aforementioned noises in the F80 forum and have not had any issues with car performance.

I stopped by BMW this morning and the foreman took a quick listen to my car. He believes is it a bushing in the suspension making the noise. I have an appointment for Thursday to get it further investigated and fixed.

I've noticed the same sound only yesterday at lower creeping speeds from the front right area. Nothing at higher speeds. Performance is unaffected.

Quick update...

The dealer believes the problem is in the strut on the driver's side of the car, and has the part on order from Germany. I'll be taking it back in a week or so to get this swapped out and see if it fixes the noise. In the mean time, the noise has become a bit less noticeable (perhaps temperature related?)

Keep us updated, having the same issue here. Creaking sound at low speeds (parking lot etc). Just started noticing it once the temperature dropped to around the 50's

Did you get this issue resolved as I'm having a similar issue?

Is this not just the electric steering? I can't say I think of it as an issue.

I started have the same issue as well, cracking/clicking sound as i turn the steering wheel when im stationary.

I have kw v3 and i thought it's something in the suspension so i called kw and right away they told me its the upper mount. They said its a very common problem most installers tend to over torque the upper mounts and end up cracking the bearing on it. Bolts on there should only be torqued 20-35 ft-lb.

The part can be ordered throw the dealer for $200 and the dealer calls it "guide support".

However if ur running stock suspension and never had any work done on the suspension, im not sure if what i stated above applies to you.

That's your problem right there. At least that's what the dealer is going to say.

Torque on the center top nut or the bolts to the upper mount? Neither one has any affects on the load of the bearing let along crack it.

By the torque value it looks like the bolts holding the tower brace to the mount. Those won't affect the bearing at all.

So u dont think its the upper mount? If not, what do u think the issue is?

It's a tough call without physically being there. I would check for any bind in the spring while turning the wheel and make sure everything is torqued down properly.

Man that sucks, the shop ordered the part already. I would hate for it to be something else and make the shop buy the part for nothing

At least you know you have eliminated the top mounts. The shop could very well have cracked the bearing while doing the install, it's plastic so not very hard to do if they didn't seat the spring properly.
