oil level inactive, WHY?
so my e92 has started showing ''oil level inactive, check at next service'' on the idrive and it has set my oil service to 500 miles. Im not sending my car to BMW for a service as it has just had one in the middle of the year by a local garage. It wont read the oil level no matter what I try, any one else had this issue and have the solution?

Yer I was thinking sensor but at £150 it's an expensive thing to test as if it's not the sensor it's a complete waste. I'll check the wires, as its so low may be water in the connector.

Oil level sensors fail. You need to replace yours. You can check the wiring but that is a longshot. The sensor has two functions: Oil level and Oil condition. Based on the warning, the oil condition sensor may still be working but they are replaced as an assembly.
The connectors are very water tight. Unless your bottom cover is removed and you have struck something in the road you will find it intact. |

I had the same problem last winter at 97k. So I checked the wiring and proceed to clean the connection. Everything was fine, so I changed the oil and then the oil level came back to read that I had the correct oil level. I haven't had any problems since. I'm not sure why bmw couldn't just put a dipstick in the engine like normal automotive company's

Any coding or mods done lately?
I am sure this is a stupid question but I have to ask it, your are letting the car get to operating temperature?

yer the error never goes away and I had my lci tail lights coded not long ago but cant think if the error came up before or after. Also I had the rear end repaired by bmw and the wireing loom was broken causing all sorts of errors so they replaced it and cleared all errors, not sure if they done any programing but I never had the problem before that.

It certainly is possible that the wrong or an additional code line may have been changed to inactivate the oil level portion but I wouldn't think you would be getting a request for service indicator. I have very little experience with coding but if you go to the coding section of this forum we have some very skilled individuals that may be able to help eliminated my suggestion of a coding issue.

I did read something about the water pump or thermostat can be the cause. Because the oil level is worked out at certain temps the water pump going too fast constantly or the thermostat being stuck open would cause the engine to run too cool and it can't perform its calibration. So the next thing is how do I know if the water pump and thermostat are working properly as it might have always been because of one of them and not the sensor?

So I was driving to work this morning and I went onto the idrive oil menu, it said measuring oil instead of oil level inactive then after about 5 mins it had me a reading. Great that its working but I am a bit lost why it didn't until now and it randomly works again.
