M2 Flagship Car?
I don't know why, but I have this deep hope that this M2 becomes the new "Flagship" sports car! I know BMW is going to try and keep it off the heels of the M3/M4 with them being the traditional "flagship sports car, but does anyone else think that this new M2 could really be the new big thing with the roots of the M3? I cant be the only one!!!

I'm not sure if BMW see the M6 as flagship? M2 could be the sportiest in the lineup and the purist for sure, here's hoping!!

I have those thoughts as well...........hope it`s not all wishful thinking
The way I look at things; - The 1M did set the bar pretty high - The next car is always better than it`s predecessor - There`s plenty competition ( Mercedes A45 AMG, Audi SR3) So I would suggest; make a ///M-Power-full statement here, and do what has to be done. NOBLESSE OBLIGE QED |

Some people only define performance by numbers... 0-60, Ring time, etc. If that is solely what one looks at a car, then most likely the M2 will not meet the M3 numbers. Many though care about other things like feel, sound, weight, involvement. In that case the M2 has the potential to be edgier than the M3/M4 and possibly capture the hearts of many.
The E90 had had more cylinders, power, 0-60 and many numbers better than 1M yet the 1M captured the hearts of many even though it had the more humble motor and many of the same parts. Personally, I wanted an M3 since I was a young man. For many years I couldn't afford one. E30 came and went.. E36 came and went. When E46 came out I fell in love and missed it also. Finally I got to a point where I could get my dream car. I went for the M3 E90 which had all the clout and numbers but there was something missing. Then when the little 1M came out, it brought back all the excitement, sound and fun that the earlier cars had. So the M2 will be designed to not surpass the M3's numbers but it has the potential simply because of it's size and weight to surpass it in involvement and fun. I truly hope it does because then we would end up with two great choices....the 4 door M3 or M2. |

The M2 will become the new enthusiast's flagship simply because the M3 has become too big. Just like the M3 never surpassed the M5's power, the M2's output will never surpass the M3's. But power/handling balance will be better on the 2 just like the 3's has always been better than the 5's. Let's just hope that BMW doesn't try to impede the passing of the baton by purposely neutering the M2's handling because of some stupid sentimentality about the "M3" badge. If they really care that much they should never have bloated the M3 to its current proportions. Personally I don't think they are that sentimental about it and do foresee the M2 becoming the lineup's driver's car.
The new BMW math: M2 is the new M3, M3 is the new M5, M5 is some kind of "M" 7 series, 7 series is a 747 |

No it`s not, it depends very much how you`ll define "flagship" Let`s take some history lessons here; In the 70-ties we had the 2002 Turbo, which car made history as the 1st production car with turbo, in fact the car was the "flagship" for BMW at that time. The E30 M3 a decade later, the car that is living history as we speak, at the time it was the technical "flagship" at BMW. And it was not the most expensive Bimmer at the time. So by no means we speak about most HP, most expensive, most luxury.......no not at all! For a technical brand like BMW, "flagship" is IMHO more about technical know how, technical expertise, R&D, and how all this knowledge will see a production car, to confirm what the brand means, that re-defines the brand, makes the brand stronger than before, to be aware of it`s historical roots. Now an M2, as 1st 2series ///M and succeeding the utterly famous 1M (talking about "flagship") has a a mighty responsibility! The brand has to deliver, a new "flagship" so to speak ! I think hero or cult car is getting confused with flagship. It may be a language thing but:-
Flagship i8/M6/M5 Cult cars 1M/M3

"A flagship is a vessel used by the commanding officer of a group of naval ships, reflecting the custom of its commander, characteristically a flag officer, flying a distinguishing flag. Used more loosely, it is the lead ship in a fleet of vessels, typically the first, largest, fastest, most heavily armed, or best known."
I'd say the i8 is BMWs "flagship" right now. |

In my country there was once, long ago, an admiral named Michiel Adriaansz de Ruiter.............famous all over the world for his naval genius and strategies.
He had non the less for many times not the best boats under his command, also his own ship was not the best ship in the Dutch naval fleet, though it was his flagship............... |

Well this thread derailed.
Anyway, get what you saying, won't be a flagship but may carry a cult status as well as be a preferred choice for enthusiasts looking for the new school of the old school. As in someone looking for a new car to reminisce the e30 M3 or the like. Also, during the 2002Turbo period the ultimate car to have would be the e9 3.0 CSL. But for those who couldnt afford that, which was many many many people, they had the next best performer in terms of drivers car, the 2002 Turbo |
