Tuning in general

I pains me to write this, but I was so gung-ho to tune my car that I almost did an ecu tune with a local shop that is doing it. But the better of me, started to worry about warranty issue. Local shop RSP motorsport is now doing ecu tune here in London Canada, for BMW and other cars and they seem to do also for many other makes. I was all set to to do the 2 series one they have but at last minute canceled. I have been peering over these pages for quite a while now and was tempted to do the piggy backs, Dinan or this one from RSP. I chose RSP as they are in my back yard. But as I have leased this car, it is not technically mine, BMW owns it. So by messing with ECU I could be in trouble if anything happens. As much as I want more power, I think I will have to be satisfied with what the 228i currently gives until lease is done. Otherwise have to do Dinan for warranty but that is 200km from here at BUDDS bmw and they charge $2000 CAD. Anyone else back out of tunes due to lease/warranty issues?

My answer to that would be to "go ahead and mod the car"! It is a matter of having a good relationship with your service adviser so they can help you out by not flagging your vin. My vehicle is a lease and I went all out on mine with over $20k in mods which include aesthetic and performance mods. After having my car for 2 days the mod bug hit me and I did lowering springs and lets just say it was all down hill from there. Dinan is a bit too conservative of a tune for me as I needed some adjustment to be able to run different types of fuels. With piggy back tunes there will always be a way for the dealership to measure increased boost numbers and with an ecu reflash as long as it is put back to stock that boost increase would be undetected. If you are REALLY paranoid about your warranty then just go with Dinan and call it a day.

Just grab a stage 1 BMS, takes 10 minutes to get it uninstalled.

Thanks for advice. Bms sounds good but I don't trust myself under hood to mess around with connections.....I even went to several shops in town if they would assist on install ...none would do it.

It is honestly as easy as plugging a plug into a wall. Even the least mechanically inclined people can do it without much problem.

I'm not certain how wild I'll get with the modifications yet as I'd like to keep the warranty. I don't think I would mind removing an external device before service.

I'm interested in the JB4 for the flexibility for any future mods. If I have no other mods on the car, would it essentially function like the Stage 1?

I'm also not that much of a fan of the additional quick connects of the JB4 though. It's a small splice and can be covered easily with some electrical tape but it's not a clean removal. Repeated removal and install of the quick connect could also lead to exposing the cables.

You may want to consider RaceChip Ultimate.
I can help you on the installation over the phone. It is that easy.

I agree with r33 Racechip Ultimate is a much smoother stage1 tune also better build quality, water proof case & you can change maps right from the unit.
If you ever add extra mod like Intercooler/Chargepipe/Downpipe i know dial F is the most recommended.
There's plenty of ppl running both tunes nowadays which ever you choose would be better than stock.

Thanks for offer. Race chip looks pretty good....if/when I pull trigger for a tune that will probably be the one. Just need to do some more contemplation....The time is coming soon.
